Weiner wouldn’t be first politician to come back after sex scandal

Weiner wouldn’t be first politician to come back after sex scandal | NYC MAYORAL RACE | Scoop.it

by SITAL PATEL (Marketwatch)

Former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner made his comeback official by kicking off his bid to run for mayor of New York City on Wednesday.  The disgraced politician released a YouTube video declaring he will fight for the middle class and asking for a second chance from New Yorkers.

Weiner famously resigned in 2011 after being caught up in scandal involving inappropriate photos and messages with several women on Twitter.

The run comes after a carefully calculated comeback, orchestrated over the last few months, which includes several carefully placed interviews, a profile in New York Times Magazine and recently hiring a campaign manager.

Weiner wouldn’t be the first politician to recover from a sex scandal if elected. Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford recently won a House seat in a special election. Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer managed to get a talk show and become a columnist after being exposed for patronizing prostitutes. And most famously, President Bill Clinton, after admitting to a relationship with Monica Lewinsky while still in the Oval Office, went onto finish his term with high approval ratings and now runs the Clinton Foundation.

A recent poll showed Weiner was in second place, behind Christine Quinn, speaker of the New York City Council, in a crowded Democratic field.

Why black voters are backing Anthony Weiner in N.Y. mayor race (+video)

Why black voters are backing Anthony Weiner in N.Y. mayor race (+video) | NYC MAYORAL RACE | Scoop.it

"During a summer season of politics charged with issues of race, it has been black voters in New York who have helped propel the political redemption of former Congressman Anthony Weiner. The once Twitter-happy candidate, who resigned his House seat in 2011 after sexting disclosures, has surged to the top of the polls in the race for mayor, and he leads the current crowd with 25 percent of Democratic primary voters, according to this week’s Quinnipiac University poll. Former front-runner, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, is second with 23 percent, and last election's runner-up, former Comptroller William Thompson, is a distant third with 11 percent." http://bit.ly/13inLWn
