Aurora College #YZF #NWT #student #housing policy called unfair

Aurora College #YZF #NWT #student #housing policy called unfair | NWT News | Scoop.it

Students that manage to get into housing pay anywhere from $300 a month for a bachelor suite to $465 a month for a three-bedroom apartment -- a substantially lower amount compared to those paying the market-value rate. The average market rental rate for all-sized units is $1,000 per month, according to the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation's rental housing report in the spring of 2010.

Northern_Clips's insight:

"Local students need housing as much as out-of-town students," she said. "Going forward, everyone should be treated equally in the program."

Frame Lake MLA Wendy Bisaro received a complaint from a constituent about the housing policy at Aurora College two years ago. After reading the policy she was not impressed with the advantage given to out-of-town students. She raised the issue in her member's statement to the legislative assembly May 30.

"In my statement I said that the policy is discriminatory and I do think it is," she said.

Arychuk said she is aware of Bisaro's criticisms. She said the policy was reviewed in June by the Department of Justice.

"They say there is no human rights violation at all," said Arychuk. "There is no need to change the policy."

Bisaro said she was not surprised that the college isn't going to change anything.

"I said I felt it was discriminatory and perhaps that was too strong a word, but there is an unfairness here," she said. "There is still an injustice. I just want fairness, and I just don't think that policy's fair."

Interesting.. one wonders why the city is doing this and how much it costs? "..a vibrant, exciting and cool place to live, shop, eat and enjoy..." Really? all the reports I read say there too many closed stores because merchants are moveing out to the "suburbs"and nobody wants to live there because of the high cost, violence and drunks...

Sunday Garden Tour: Yellowknife, NWT

Sunday Garden Tour: Yellowknife, NWT | NWT News | Scoop.it

I have to say that going to Yellowknife, capital city of the North West Territories, has been on my wish-list for quite some time. Even though I live in central Alberta (which most Canadians erroneously think of as "the north," anyway), Yellowknife is a good 1500 kilomteters /932 miles up. Anyway you slice it, it's 20 hours of driving north.Last weekend, I got my wish, as an invited speaker at the Territorial Farmers Association's annual fall harvest event. They invited me to give two-hour slideshow and talk about my up-coming book and the various models of urban agriculture I'd seen on my travels to their members. As it turned out, I had a crowd of about 50-some food gardeners / northern farmers / interested foodies who came from various communities in the NWT.

See Part Two:

Ron Berezan, aka The Urban Farmer, and I piled into France Benoit's SUV and as we drove the gorgeous route from Yellowknife's downtown to Madeline Lake to this filmmaker / gardener's off-grid home cabin and greenhouse. France told me that she gets about 300 pounds of produce, a retail value of $1000 in fresh produce, from the 1000-sq foot greenhouse.

Homeless in Yellowknife: An Emerging Social Challenge #YZF #NWT

Homeless in Yellowknife: An Emerging Social Challenge #YZF #NWT | NWT News | Scoop.it
PDF Download

There is a considerable amount of visible homelessness in Yellowknife (NWT), yet very little third-party analysis of the situation. This report begins by briefly discussing who is homeless in Yellowknife and then outlines program responses, including emergency shelters and various models of housing. An overview will then be provided of major funding initiatives from the federal and territorial governments, as well as various forms of homelessness assistance provided by the City of Yellowknife. The report concludes by making policy recommendations with respect to the need for increased accountability, shelter standards, more housing options for the homeless, and a public health response to alcohol and drug use.

Open Deh Cho bridge leads to load restrictions on shipments to Yellowknife

Compounding the frustration of city business owners was the short notice they received of the restriction which limited trucks to 75 per cent of their maximum freight.

"Am I annoyed? Of course I'm annoyed," said Yellowknife Co-Op general manager Ben Walker, who was notified of the restrictions on Wednesday, a day before it came into effect. "For the consumer, maybe nothing goes up. But our Co-op members will pay for this. It comes out of their pocket."

Walker said the Yellowknife Co-Op's freighting costs for groceries spiked by 34 per cent as a result of the restrictions because more trucks were needed to fulfill the store's supply needs.

Northern_Clips's insight:

"...The Deh Cho Bridge has, for the first time, allowed for 24/7 traffic on the Highway 3 in the springtime. Allowing commercial trucking year round has prompted the territory to enforce a weight limit on transport trucks to protect the road when it is vulnerable during the spring melt. The result could mean an increase in springtime shipping costs that many thought the bridge would alleviate...."

Northern_Clips's insight:

Now that the Long John Jamboree organizing committee has announced the upcoming Yellowknife's Greatest Baker competition, set for Sunday, every opportunity to practice baking brings entrants closer to the crown.

Adrian Bell, who spearheaded the inaugural winter jamboree, said although the festival is not scheduled until March, he hopes the baking competition will get the excitement rolling.

"Basically, the idea is to have a greatest baker contest, to get all kinds of contestants to compete in seven different categories: from cakes to muffins to bannock, things like that to just compete, do their best, and we'll hand out prizes," said Bell.

#YZF #NWT Inukshuk #Housing Co-op exodus 17 co-op tenants to be relocated; resident says complex became unlivable

#YZF #NWT Inukshuk #Housing Co-op exodus 17 co-op tenants to be relocated; resident says complex became unlivable | NWT News | Scoop.it

The resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said she is distressed about the move because of emotional attachments after having lived in her home for 23 years, but maintenance upkeep at the co-op has deteriorated so badly in recent years.

The woman said maintenance problems include a lack of fresh air ventilation, freezing water pipes, and a tendency for her unit to get too cold. She said five or six years ago a neighbour's sewage pipe froze and caused sewage to seep into her unit.

“My neighbour's lines froze up and the sewage line was connected. Her sewage overflowed into my kitchen and it went all over the place,” she said.

“When I came home half of my living room was sopping wet. We are talking sewage here. They did not bother to call the proper people.”

She said co-op management replaced an underlying portion of the floor but didn't replace the carpeting.

Between now and July, people living in 17 subsidized housing units in the Inukshuk Housing Co-op will be relocated to various locations within the city, said Bob Bies, chief executive officer of the Yellowknife Housing Authority.

Northern_Clips's insight:

Between now and July, people living in 17 subsidized housing units in the Inukshuk Housing Co-op will be relocated to various locations within the city, said Bob Bies, chief executive officer of the Yellowknife Housing Authority.

His organization is getting out of Inukshuk after an agreement after coming to a mutual agreement with the co-op, which owns the properties, and the NWT Housing Corporation, which mandates the level of public housing in NWT communities.

“We're transferring all of the tenants from Inukshuk into more suitable housing,” said Bies, adding that the housing authority has mandate to manage 292 units in Yellowknife but is currently over that number.

[excerpt]

As established by the Mars Exploration Program, the main scientific goals of the MSL mission are to help determine whether Mars could ever have supported life, as well as determining the role of water, and to study the climate and geology of Mars.[8][7][8] The mission will also help prepare for human exploration.[8]

Attempting these goals, the Curiosity rover has eight main scientific objectives:

Biological

(1) Determine the nature and inventory of organic carbon compounds

(2) Inventory the chemical building blocks of life (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorous, and sulfur)

(3) Identify features that may represent the effects of biological processes (biosignatures)

Geological and geochemical

(4) Investigate the chemical, isotopic, and mineralogical composition of the Martian surface and near-surface geological materials

(5) Interpret the processes that have formed and modified rocks and soils

Planetary process

(6) Assess long-timescale (i.e., 4-billion-year) Martian atmospheric evolution processes

(7) Determine present state, distribution, and cycling of water and carbon dioxide

Surface radiation

(8) Characterize the broad spectrum of surface radiation, including galactic radiation, cosmic radiation, solar proton events and secondary neutrons
