I want that... and that...and that! If only we all could get these new designs, technologies and equipment for our libraries!

Carol Williams's insight:

Um... This is what librarians have been saying all along. People USE our facilities, they physically come in, use our computers and like our books. And with so many unemployed, they need our services more than ever. The problem often is with lower stats is that when funding gets cut, branches have to close, therefore many who walked to the library branch can no longer physically get to the main library.

In response to critics, @NYPL rethinks design plans

In response to critics, @NYPL rethinks design plans | NWI Public Libraries | Scoop.it
The New York Public Library, responding to outcry over plans to demolish century-old book stacks, will this fall unveil a new design that preserves a significant portion of them.
Carol Williams's insight:

Just when you think no one knows you're there or cares about what you're doing... along comes the uproar and protests about your plans, despite the fact that you've make it public all the while. I sympathzsize with the NYPL. They need to renovate, but how do you do that and still preserve the history? Its a tough spot. I hope they can manage to do both (and find the money).

Porter County Public Library System

Porter County Public Library System | NWI Public Libraries | Scoop.it
Carol Williams's insight:

The Library as the Heart of the Community We want the people of Porter County to encounter a library system that exceeds their expectat ions in every way. People in our community will consider the library essential to achieving their personal goals. When they have an information need they will think immediately of the library, and the library will be readily available to them, physically or electronically. The library staff will deliver materials and services based on community needs and desires and impart knowledge and wisdom that helps people make informed decisions that can improve their day- to-day lives. In serving the community, the Porter County Public Library System fully accepts the responsibility to maintain the democratic principles expressed by the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights.

Why public libraries are glamming up
The Guardian
Library campaigners, among whom I count myself, need not be too full of doom and gloom.
Carol Williams's insight:

"We make jokes about diffident library staff hiding behind the stacks or in the stock room, yet people trust them as they trust few others. Librarians may agonise over matters of taste, propriety and the suitability of the materials they stock, compared with the moral neutrality of the commercial marketplace, yet we admire them for doing so."    BRAVO!!!! very well said! This is so true, and I wish that there were more people who thought like this in the US.

Carol Williams's insight:

This isn't NWI, but we've had this issue brought before our Board in the past. When money is tight, we can't just decide we're going to charge people to get cards. Yes, it sounds at first like a solution, but if access is not free, then we're not a public library anymore--and then we're in even more financial trouble.

Carol Williams's insight:

Yay for Technical Services! As a TS Librarian myself, I have to say that our department does an incredible amount of work that the rest of the staff and patrons don't even realize goes on. It's really nice to see it mentioned once and a while.
