21 Vegetarian Foods Loaded With Iron

21 Vegetarian Foods Loaded With Iron | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it
Iron is a nutrient necessary for good functioning of the human body. A diet lacking in iron can result in low energy levels, shortness of breath, headaches

Did you know that you can get all the non-heme iron your body needs from plant based real whole foods?

Phytates in the seeds of plants have been shown to detoxify excess iron in your body, which if not detoxified can create a very harmful kind of free radical called hydroxyl radicals. This information comes from Dr Michael Greger in his book, “How Not To Die”.

Animal based meat contains the type of iron (heme) which is associated with colorectal cancer and lacks the phytates to kill off the harmful free radicals. Heme iron is found in blood and muscle.

Iron acts as a pro oxidant as it can generate cancer causing free radicals. Too little iron and you get anemia and too much may increase risk of cancer and heart disease.

Dr Greger writes that when a sufficient amount of iron is in your blood, your body is about five times more effective at blocking the absorption of excess iron from plant foods than from animal foods.

Heme iron is also associated with higher risk f diabetes, but non-heme iron from plants is not.

Health Tips:  The healthiest sources of iron from plant foods are green leafy veggies, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. If you drink tea, drink in between meals as tea can inhibit iron absorption.

Consuming plant based foods rich in vitamin C, including bell peppers and broccoli can improve iron absorption.

8 Things That Happen to Your Body When You Eat Sugar

8 Things That Happen to Your Body When You Eat Sugar | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it
By revving the brain's reward and appetite center, fructose can interfere with feelings of satiety and can damage organs and tissue.

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, May 17, 7:50 PM

Did you know that sugar, an addictive sweet poison that messes with your brain’s reward center and leads to chronic diseases is not your friend?

Sugar harms your gut bacteria, your brain, your immune system, your liver, your kidneys, your pancreas, your heart, your vision, and your cells.

Over consumption of sugar, fructose, artificial sweeteners, processed, so called healthy sugars and unripe fruit all contribute to the sugar disaster.

Consumption of white processed flours, breads, pancakes, pasta, and over eating of white potatoes and white rice, as well as other simple carbs which have little to no fiber (crackers, chips, pastries, cakes, cookies, donuts, snacks) speed the absorption of glucose into your bloodstream eventually causing a sugar crash.

Health Tips: Eat real whole plant based foods rich in fiber which slow the progression of sugars in your bloodstream. Both soluble and insoluble fiber help you manage your blood sugar.

Insoluble is the roughage component of greens, veggies, fruits., and whole grains. These foods fill you up without causing weight gain.

Soluble fiber is found in oats, legumes (beans, split peas, lentils), nuts, seeds. Foods high in soluble fiber delay the rate at which your stomach empties , slowing the digestion of sugar and starches, while controlling blood sugar spikes.

Make sure to eat some plant based proteins and healthy fat with your fiber rich foods. If you’re relatively healthy, then consuming some ripe fruit is a wise choice.

Nuts/seeds and butters go well with ripe fruit. Avocado is a low sugar fruit as is tomato, cucumber, zucchini, and lemons, limes.
