Could olive oil be the latest weapon against disease?

Could olive oil be the latest weapon against disease? | Nutrition Today | Scoop.it

"Oleocanthal - an ingredient in extra virgin olive oil - kills a cancer cell within 30 minutes by rupturing its lysosome - the cell's 'waste dump', scientists from Rutgers University, U.S., found.

Ingredient in the dressing kills tumour cells without hurting healthy ones:
-- An ingredient in extra virgin olive oil- oleocanthal- kills cancerous cells

-- Ruptures the cell's lysosome - it's waste dump - which kills it quickly

-- It doesn't harm healthy cells - just temporarily 'puts them to sleep'

-- Next researchers will see if oleocanthal shrinks tumours in living animals."

  • Coffee May Prevent and Treat Alzheimer’s
  • Coffee May Help Diabetics
  • Caffeine Used to Fight Skin Cancer
  • Coffee Helps Hepatitis C Patients
Teo Rui Ling's curator insight, February 22, 9:35 AM

I was really surprised after reading the article. I have always thought that drinking caffeine makes one dull and slow, but it can actually treat illnesses such as skin cancer or even Alzheimer's! Maybe coffee can do one good too. But it is still good to keep the quantity moderate, as too much can also do bad. Overall, this piece of news encouraged me to continue to drink more caffeine as I was afraid that I would become dull in the future if i consumed too much. Nevertheless, we ought to take in more caffeine as prevention is better than cure, for example; preventing one from getting Alzheimer's.

51 Healthy Food Items That Cost Under $1 | Nutrition Today | Scoop.it
Sure, you can spend a lot to eat healthy, but you can also spend a ton of money on a very unhealthy diet. I've always noticed that the food we should be eating the most of (according to the good old USDA) - things like grains, legumes, fruits and veggies - happen to cost less on a per-pound basis than the food that's bad for us, at least in large quantities (red meat, fatty dairy products, processed foods, etc.).

US force feeds GM crops to African nations, says new report - Friends of the earth international

US force feeds GM crops to African nations, says new report - Friends of the earth international | Nutrition Today | Scoop.it

“The US, the world's top producer of GM crops, is seeking new markets for American GM crops in Africa. The US administration's strategy consists of assisting African nations to produce biosafety laws that promote agribusiness interests instead of protecting Africans from the potential threats of GM crops,” said Haidee Swanby from the African Centre for Biosafety, which authored the report commissioned by Friends of the Earth International.

The new report also exposes how agribusiness giant Monsanto influences biosafety legislation in African countries, gains regulatory approval for its product, and clears the path for products such as GM maize (corn).
