Mimicking diet changes of global travel reveals clues to gut health - Washington University in St. Louis News

Mimicking diet changes of global travel reveals clues to gut health - Washington University in St. Louis News | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it
By Julia Evangelou Strait, September 24, 2015    "Adding to the growing understanding of the importance of gut bacteria in human health, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis studied gut motility, measuring in mice the time it takes food to move through the gastrointestinal tract in a way that mimics the dietary effects of world travel.

The study showed that transit time through the gut is influenced by many interacting factors, including the types of human microbial communities present in the gut, how the microbial citizens of these communities process human bile acids involved in digestion and how this processing impacts the body’s organs that govern gut motility."

What’s Wrong with Our Wheat? | Terroir Seeds

What’s Wrong with Our Wheat? | Terroir Seeds | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it

"Today’s commercial wheat – a semi-dwarf, high-yield type – is causing many people to be sick. Gluten intolerance or celiac disease has skyrocketed since the 1970s and shows no sign of slowing down. A decade ago, gluten intolerance levels were at 1 in 2,500 worldwide. Today, it’s at 1 in 133! What has happened to the grain that has fed us for thousands of years is inedible for an increasing number of people? So what has happened? Why has bread, and by extension many grains, become bad for our health?"

Mediterranean Diet: 4 Incredible Facts to Know

Mediterranean Diet: 4 Incredible Facts to Know | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it
The Mediterranean diet offers many benefits to personal health as well as our environment. It is a lifestyle that enhances the quality of our lives.

While I usually maintain a very healthy eating regime (organic whenever possible, superfoods, and I steer clear  of gluten, dairy and sugar cane), I vowed to adopt a Mediterranean diet once back in the United States. I say “adopt” because the Mediterranean diet is not a diet in the traditional sense at all, but more of a lifestyle.

Traditionally characterized by vegetables, legumes, fruit, nuts, seeds, olive, and lots of extra virgin olive oil, and fish, this way of eating not only involves a low consumption of processed food, processed carbohydrates, sweets, chocolate, and red meat, but a state of being. The atmosphere and mind set are equally important. People enjoy long relaxed meals instead of fast food, warm climate, a sea breeze full of negative ions, and blue skies full of potential with stupendous clouds, worthy of Instagram. The pace of life in the region differs considerably from the ‘western world.’

Food As Medicine: How Diet Can Help Prevent Cancer

Food As Medicine: How Diet Can Help Prevent Cancer | Healthy Eating News | Scoop.it

"Diet in and of itself plays an important role in cancer prevention. Though the association between diet and cancer prevention is still not definitive, recent evidence suggests that diet may modify the risk of many cancers, including gastric, colorectal, breast, prostate, and lung cancers. For example, intake of dietary fiber and high consumption of fruit, vegetables, and fish has been associated with reduced risk of a number of cancers.

Some population studies also demonstrate that vegetarianism is associated with lower risk of overall cancer and female-specific cancers. On the other hand, red and processed meat, dairy, alcohol, and saturated fat increase the risk of certain cancers.  Research has found that vegetables and fruits containing high level of carotenoids (carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, papaya, tomatoes, etc.), cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bokchoy, broccoli, etc.), and antioxidant-rich foods (blueberries, blackberries, green tea, garlic, etc.) are linked to lower cancer incidence."
