A Morning Warm-Up with Turmeric Tea, Fighting Cancer & Building Our Brains at the Same Time ("super!") | Nutrition Dos and Don'ts | Scoop.it
Blog post at Fresh Bites Daily : On my recent trip to Kauai, I was spoiled by the wide availability of fresh turmeric, so much so that I created a daily ritual of turmeric t[..]

Fresh turmeric has a stronger flavor than you would expect give the dehydrated turmeric powder. The powder can be added to just about anything, particular in curry-type dishes, and you may notice only the vibrant color change. Fresh turmeric has a slightly bitter bite. The flavor is good but it is unique — it is worthy of experiencing it yourself before you dedicate a protected area of your garden to it, as I am about to do. To make a tea, you simply make an herbal infusion as you would any other herb or root. In this case, I simply added a couple of inches of turmeric, sliced, to a few cups of water. I brought it to a boil, let it simmer for a half hour or so, and then put the lid on and let it sit over night. Warm your infusion up in the morning, dilute it to taste, and add a bit of honey.

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, February 20, 2014 4:49 PM

Good advice for people to incorporate into their daily lives. People who live in the area that encompasses what is known as the "Mediterranean" are on average healthier and live longer than most North Americans on the standard American diet (SAD)/

Many healing foods grow abundantly in this region of the world - mineral rich figs, antioxidant laden pomegranates, nutritious citrus, olives, nuts, and  flavorful herbs and spices that possess unique medicinal properties. plus a wide selection of vegetables and fruits which contain healing compounds.

Fresh produce contains the highest concentration of nutrients of any food group. And studies show that eating more fresh veggies and fruits boosts the antioxidant levels in your blood and neutralizes a range of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, while reducing symptoms of chronic conditions such as arthritis, hypertension, and insulin resistance.. And it helps slow down the aging process.

And the Mediterranean Sea is also plentiful with fish and seafood which contain high levels of healing omega-3 fatty acids.

Here's 10 quick life lessons that this woman's children taught her. Read the whole article to get all the juicy details.

10 Worst Processed Foods for People With Diabetes - Diabetes Center - Everyday Health ("menu change!")

10 Worst Processed Foods for People With Diabetes - Diabetes Center - Everyday Health ("menu change!") | Nutrition Dos and Don'ts | Scoop.it
Processed foods are often loaded with sugar, salt, and preservatives, and if you have diabetes, theyre even more of a disaster. Stay away from these top 10 offenders.

Americans consume more packaged, processed foods per person than their counterparts in any other country. But while processed foods are undeniably affordable and convenient, many also contain lots of fat, salt, and sugar — and, if you have diabetes, they probably shouldn't be on your shopping list. The problem is that you might have them around out of habit, and then rely on them when you get hungry. "The best thing you can do is plan ahead," says pediatric endocrinologist Tamara Hannon, MD, associate professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Start by avoiding the following leading offenders.

The Health Care that our Doctors forgot: Why ordinary Food will be the Future of Medicine

The Health Care that our Doctors forgot: Why ordinary Food will be the Future of Medicine | Nutrition Dos and Don'ts | Scoop.it

I am referring not only to the well-known ability of nutrition to prevent diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes but to the ability of the Whole Food Plant Based diet to actually treat and thus reverse diseases that are already diagnosed or forecast by out-of-range risk factors.

A Whole Food Plant Based diet is defined as one rich in antioxidants and complex carbohydrates. It also avoids animal-based foods, refined carbohydrates, and added fat typically used to make processed, convenience foods.

Adoption of the WFPB dietary lifestyle offers far more health benefits than the modern medical system.

For those who comply, current evidence shows that at least 90% of all cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, upwards of 70% of all cancers, and a broad spectrum of other illnesses can be prevented, even cured.

It is now time to replace the current medical-based disease care system with a diet-based health care system...

Medicine has gone horribly wrong. It has become practically impossible for a rich country like the USA to pay its medical bills.

All the "solutions" are only about more of the same (more medicine) when it really is the wrong food that makes people as sick as they are... and as this article explains it is food, not medicine, that offers a solution to the problem.

There is so much advice out there about the benefits of healthy eating when you have a chronic disease or illness. For me, I have fibromyalgia, I've heard this from several doctors and people in the medical field as well as those in my fibro community online. So, I'm definitely putting away sweets, sodas, processed meats and food with hydrogenated oils and am going to replace it all with only fresh, local produce and non processed meats. We'll see how much of a  difference that makes in a month.:)

People who eat healthy tend to have the most deficiencies since they have given up many different types of food that may have previously been a source of this now deficient nutrient they are lacking.
