7 Harmful Diet Lies You Probably Believe

7 Harmful Diet Lies You Probably Believe | Nutrition Dos and Don'ts | Scoop.it
As a culture, we go through phases with our diet preferences — low-fat gave way to low-carb, dairy-free begat gluten-free, and eggs (poor eggs) are either omega-rich wunderkinds or insidious cholesterol bombs depending on the current political climate and whether or not Mercury's in retrograde.

What we eat is such an individual thing. Some people really thrive on the Paleo diet that is panned in this article. But the one thing I agree with is that eating fat does not make you fat, if it's the right forms of fat. Our brain needs fat.

Cayenne is a perennial shrub that is native to Central America and which is a mainstay of the cuisines of Latin America and the American Southwest. It's a nightshade fruit. Other common names are chili, chili pepper, red pepper. It's usually used as a powder or a cream. It is well known as a medicinal plant.

Cayenne is an anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant. It's also a digestive aid as it stimulates the production of gastric juices, aids metabolism, and relieves gas. Capsaicin in cayenne has been found to reduce the carcinogenic effect of air pollution. Cayenne helps boost your metabolism and induces your body to burn off more fat instead of storing it in your body.

Saturated Fat Isn't the Health Demon You Think It Is ("another look on the issue of fats in our diet")

Saturated Fat Isn't the Health Demon You Think It Is ("another look on the issue of fats in our diet") | Nutrition Dos and Don'ts | Scoop.it
A new book makes that case that the low-fat obsession has made us less healthy

The book comes as new research has raised questions about the long-held connection between fat intake, cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. A meta-analysis published in March looked at dozens of past nutritional studies and found no evidence that eating saturated fat—chiefly found in meat, butter and cheese—increased heart attacks and other cardiac events, nor did it find evidence of less heart disease in people eating unsaturated fats like those found in olive oil or vegetable oil. In 2013, a prominent cardiologist argued in BMJ that the long-held advice to reduce saturated fats has actually increased the risk of obesity and heart disease.

It will take more than a few studies and this new book to sway the court of public-health opinion, but for now, here’s what Teicholz’s research reveals about saturated fat:

1. The war against fat was started by one man:

2. Reducing fat has caused us to eat more carbs, which is not good:

3. That’s true even of supposedly “healthy” unrefined carbs:

4. Women have been particularly hurt by the demonization of fat:

5. We shouldn’t be so quick to ban trans fats:

6. We’ve been eating saturated fat for thousands of years:

Always Hungry? Here’s Why

Always Hungry? Here’s Why | Nutrition Dos and Don'ts | Scoop.it
Are we fat because we overeat, or do we overeat because we’re fat?

FOR most of the last century, our understanding of the cause of obesity has been based on immutable physical law. Specifically, it’s the first law of thermodynamics, which dictates that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. When it comes to body weight, this means that calorie intake minus calorie expenditure equals calories stored. Surrounded by tempting foods, we overeat, consuming more calories than we can burn off, and the excess is deposited as fat. The simple solution is to exert willpower and eat less.
