The Importance of Empathy in Nursing

The Importance of Empathy in Nursing | Registered Nursing(aspect 1) | Scoop.it

Empathy is not the same thing as sympathy. Empathy is a way to experience an emotionally or painful situation together, helping the patient feel less alone and understood. Sympathy is more of feeling sorry for a person or patient's situation. Empathy can help a person move beyond feelings of negativity and hopelessness about a situation so that they can start to focus on moving through the situation.

To be a nurse you must be patient and show a lot of support. You cant become to emotionally attached but you need to care for your patients like they mean a lot to you. You dont want them to feel bad about their situation. You need to make it easy for them and their loved ones, guide them to their strength.

Nurses will be rated on their compassion and not just their technical skills

Nurses will be rated on their compassion and not just their technical skills | Registered Nursing(aspect 1) | Scoop.it

Nurses should be formally judged on how compassionate they are, their professional chief will declare today.
Jane Cummings claims nurses must not be assessed on their technical skills alone because 'poor care is a betrayal of what we stand for'.
In recent weeks parts of the NHS have been criticed over claims that cruelty had become 'normalised' – with patients badly neglected.

In her three-year strategy for nursing – Compassion in Practice – Miss Cummings stresses the importance of 'The 6Cs' – care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment.

The Chief Nursing Officer argues many patients have been disappointed by the care they have received, saying staff must work towards 'a culture of compassionate care'.
'While the health, care and support system provides a good – often excellent – service, this is not universal,' -- Maybe I'm wrong here but to me this reads as though the nurses are to blame here for the diabolical state that our NHS is in -- I believe that this is totally wrong ... how many nurses for heavens sake would put themselves through the rigorous training, long working hours and low pay if they were not 'compassionate' enough? ... maybe the shower that call themselves a government should live a day in their lives -- It would be interesting to see just how 'compassionate' they would be! - Fx
