Main Points

  1. Ninety percent of nursing homes in the United States do not employ enough qualified care professionals to care for their residents
  2. Approximately ninety three percent of all instances of abuse go unreported each year
  3. Negligence encompasses all forms of elder abuse that are determined to be the result of intentional or passive abandonment of duty or regarding care
  4. When a nursing home staff member intentionally denies a resident care for any reason that resident has claim to compensation for negligence.
  5. Some forms of elderly neglect are isolation, ignoring, and emotional abuse

Thoughts/Opinions

There is no logical reason for a nursing home to not employ a sufficent amount of workers in order to give all its residents a positive experience. By hiring a higher number of workers residents would have more one on one time with nurses and caregivers giving thema better experience. They wouldn't experience neglect at the rate that patients are now. Knowing that ninety-three percent of all instances of abuse and neglect go unreported makes me want to educate people on the warning signs of abuse and the evidence that will be left on a person after the abuse happens.

PurposeThis article was written to inform readers about elder abuse and how often people are affected by it. The article succeeded in informing me about elder abuse and the risk that elderly people have when they enter a nursing home.

Inferences

I think that nursing homes are going to continue to employ small amounts of people. As a result of the small amount of workers and the increased amount of people who are reaching an age at which they need someone to help them doing almost everything the rate of elder abuse is only going to increase.

I also think that as elder abuse becomes more common people are going to be educated more on the warning signs of abuse and the abuse will be caught sooner. By catching the abuse sooner elderly people will be more likely to move past it.
