The Even reindeer herders in Arctic Yakutia, Siberia/Russia | eYakutia.com | English Yakutia | Inuit Nunangat Stories | Scoop.it

[excerpt] See photographs of the Even reindeer herders taken by anthropologist Florian Stammler in the northern part of the Verkhoyansk mountains in Yakutia, Siberia/Russia.

Florian Stammler is one of a few antropologists, who mainly studies the peoples of the Russian Arctic. He used to lecture in Cambridge. Now he teaches at the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland and is the coordinator of the anthropology research team at its Arctic Centre (http://www.arcticcentre.org/anthropology). He has been to Yakutia many times. This time, a couple of weeks ago, he and his wife Anna traveled to the Eveno-Bytantaisky region with Bruce Parry and his IndusFilms documentary team (wrote about them previously).

Florian is not a pro photographer. His photos are not of high quality. He uses them as illustrations to antropology lectures. That’s why they are pretty interesting. They show how the Evens live in that particular area of the Siberian Arctic.

Well Hello, Apologies for not writing sooner, but things have been crazy in this slow paced little hamlet. The flights were surprisingly uneventful............that is, until I arrive in Arviat at 7pm and only 1 of my 7 bags made it on the plane (a rather common occurance as I later found out).

Geologists Ship Out, Hoping to Claim Piece of Arctic for Canada - ScienceInsider

Geologists Ship Out, Hoping to Claim Piece of Arctic for Canada - ScienceInsider | Inuit Nunangat Stories | Scoop.it

[excerpt] With two research icebreakers, over 100 geologists and geographers from Canada and the United States, three Inuit mammal spotters on the watch for vulnerable wildlife, and two underwater autonomous vehicles that can operate beneath sheet ice, a geological survey team set out last night to crush their way through the last untrammelled regions of the Arctic, mapping the sea floor as they go. But there's far more at stake than just a geological survey: it may be the last chance for Canada to collect the high-resolution data the country needs to stake a claim to a ridge along the Arctic sea floor—and the potential natural resources it holds. Canada is facing a 2013 deadline to make their case as the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which governs this process and which Canada ratified in 2003, gives nations a decade to submit such claims.

Cathy Towtongie, president of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc, said she took to the streets to celebrate.

"People were looking at me stunned; so I did my own celebrating, like stopping complete strangers. I had so much fun," she said with a laugh.

Growing up, Towtongie said her father would tell her stories about hunting bowhead whales before the restrictions were in place.

"If you strike it successfully, it's as easy as killing a sparrow," she said.

Towtongie said she was at the Anglican church last Sunday morning, Aug. 14, when several hunters left for the hunt. She hugged the captain of one of the ships and wished him luck but also gave him a message of inspiration. "I told him this is for my father," she said.

"It's really touching because ... our ancestors would have rejoiced to see this day when they would freely partake in the bowhead feast."

Towtongie said her brother-in-law Eneasie Kanayuk's boat was the first one to reach the bowhead whale. One of the hunters on the boat, Luc Peter, threw the first harpoon, she said.

[...]

Currently, Nunavut is permitted to harvest three bowhead whales a year. Hunts will also take place this year in Kugaaruk and Coral Harbour.

Researchers hope to solve Arctic riddle of Franklin's lost ships

Researchers hope to solve Arctic riddle of Franklin's lost ships | Inuit Nunangat Stories | Scoop.it

Members of the arctic expedition led by British explorer Sir John Franklin (1786 - 1847) on their attempt to discover the Northwest passage. The expedition was beleaguered by thick ice and Franklin died in June 1847 and most of the team died of starvation. Original Publication: From a painting by W. Turner Smith.

[excerpt]

Beginning Sunday, near the oddly named Royal Geographical Society Islands in western Nunavut, a Parks Canada-led team of researchers will begin trying — yet again — to unravel the ultimate Arctic mystery: the whereabouts of the lost ships of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition.

The experts are armed with everything from historical Inuit testimony and the scrawled writings of 19th-century explorers to state-of-the-art seabed scanners and the latest computer simulations of ice movement through the Arctic Archipelago

[...]

This year’s search is targeting an area farther north, between Victoria Island and King William Island, where the other ship is believed to have gone down after remaining trapped near the smaller Royal Geographical Society Islands.

Resolute resident Doreen McDonald said she was listening to music when her husband heard a large explosion. They looked outside, but could see nothing. The whole of Resolute was blanketed in a thick fog.

I don't know why anyone would risk trying to land in those conditions,” said Ms. McDonald, who runs the airport gift shop.
