## The first light atomic nucleus with a second face

To some degree of approximation, atomic nuclei look like spheres which in most cases are distorted to a greater or lesser extent. When the nucleus is excited, its shape may change, but only for an extremely brief moment, after which it returns to its original state. A relatively permanent 'second face' of atomic nuclei has so far only been observed in the most massive elements. In a spectacular experiment, physicists from Poland, Italy, Japan, Belgium and Romania have registered it in a light nucleus.

## Nuclear deformation in the A~100 region: Comparison between new masses and mean-field predictions

The nuclear mass region around $\ensuremath{\approx}100$ is one of the most important for understanding the origin of non-spherical shapes in heavy nuclei, as well as the evolution from spherical to deformed shapes as a function of neutron and proton number. Precise mass measurements are often key to delineating such regions of structural change. The present paper, using state-of-the-art Penning-trap and time-of-flight mass spectrometry techniques, further maps out the locus of shape change in this region through measurements of new masses, particularly in the rubidium isotopes. The results, and accompanying theoretical calculations, point to the importance of further mass measurements in the neighboring krypton isotopes, promising key insights into the evolution of competing prolate and oblate shapes.

## In-gas-cell laser spectroscopy of the magnetic dipole moment of the N~126 isotope 199Pt

The magnetic dipole moment and mean-square charge radius of $^{199g}\mathrm{Pt}$ $({I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=$ $5/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}},{t}_{1/2}=30.8$ min) ground state and $^{199m}\mathrm{Pt}$ $({E}_{\mathrm{ex}}=424$ keV, ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=$ (13/2)${}^{+},{t}_{1/2}=13.6$ s) isomeric state are evaluated for the first time from investigations of the hyperfine splitting of the ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{1}=248.792$ nm transition by in-gas-cell laser ionization spectroscopy. Ground and isomeric states of neutron-rich $^{199}\mathrm{Pt}$ nucleus were produced by a multinucleon transfer reaction at the KEK Isotope Separation System (KISS), designed for the study of nuclear spectroscopy in the vicinity of $N=126$. The measured magnetic dipole moments $+0.75$(8)${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\mathrm{N}}$ and $\ensuremath{-}0.57$(5)${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{\mathrm{N}}$ are consistent with the systematics of those of nuclei with ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=$ $5/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=$ $13/{2}^{+}$, respectively.

## Big Bang Nucleosynthesis with Stable 8Be and the Primordial Lithium Problem

A change in the fundamental constants of nature could stabilize 8Be against decay into two 4He nuclei. Coc et al. examined this effect on big bang nucleosynthesis as a function of B8, the mass difference between two 4He nuclei and a single 8Be nucleus, and found no effects for B8≤100 keV. Here we examine larger B8 and also allow for a variation in the rate for 4He + 4He ⟶ 8Be to determine the threshold for interesting effects. We find no change to standard big bang nucleosynthesis for B8<1 MeV. For B8≳1 MeV and a sufficiently large reaction rate, a significant fraction of 4He is burned into 8Be, which fissions back into 4He when B8 assumes its present-day value, leaving the primordial 4He abundance unchanged. However, this sequestration of 4He results in a decrease in the primordial 7Li abundance. Primordial abundances of 7Li consistent with observationally-inferred values can be obtained for reaction rates similar to those calculated for the present-day (unbound 8Be) case. Even for the largest binding energies and largest reaction rates examined here, only a small fraction of 8Be is burned into heavier elements, consistent with earlier studies. There is no change in the predicted deuterium abundance for any model we examined.
