## World's First Medical Radioactive Isotope Was Handled in Shirt and Tie

Oak Ridge National Laboratory has just released in high resolution this amazing historical photo. According to ORNL, in this photograph you can see two scientists as they remove the world’s first radioactive isotope produced for medical use from Oak Ridge’s Graphite Reactor, on August 2nd 1946. In compulsory collar and tie.

## ISOLDE: A milestone toward a higher-energy nuclear physics facility

via WordLink - CERN's nuclear physics facility ISOLDE will soon be producing radioactive ion beams at higher energies. The purpose of the HIE-ISOLDE (High Intensity and Energy ISOLDE) project, now in the advanced stages of construction at CERN, is to increase the energy and intensity of the ISOLDE beams. The transportation and installation of the first acceleration module on Saturday, 2 May marked an important milestone in the project. Made up of five superconducting accelerating cavities, this

## NuPECC Brochure “Light to Reveal the Heart of Matter”

NuPECC, the Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (http://www.nupecc.org/) is contributing to the International Year of Light with a brochure “Light to Reveal the Heart of Matter”. We would like to show the many facets how the electromagnetic spectrum – light in its broadest sense – is featured in nuclear physics research, from high-energy gamma-rays down to scintillation light and lasers, looking into nucleons and nuclei, and connecting to other fields such as astrophysics and medicine.

## Experimental study of the 66Ni(d,p)67Ni one-neutron transfer reaction

The quasi-SU(3) sequence of the positive parity $\ensuremath{\nu}{g}_{9/2},{d}_{5/2},{s}_{1/2}$ orbitals above the $N=40$ shell gap are assumed to induce strong quadrupole collectivity in the neutron-rich Fe $(Z=26)$ and Cr $(Z=24)$ isotopes below the nickel region. In this paper the position and strength of these single-particle orbitals are characterized in the neighborhood of $^{68}\mathrm{Ni} (Z=28,\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}N=40)$ through the $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}(d,p)^{67}\mathrm{Ni}$ one-neu
