Evolution of nuclear shapes in odd-mass yttrium and niobium isotopes from lifetime measurements following fission reactions | Nuclear Physics | Scoop.it
Lifetimes of excited states in $^{99}\mathrm{Y},^{101}\mathrm{Y},^{101}\mathrm{Nb},^{103}\mathrm{Nb}$, and $^{105}\mathrm{Nb}$ were measured in an experiment using the recoil distance Doppler shift method at GANIL (Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds). The neutron-rich nuclei were produced in fission reactions between a $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ beam and a $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ target. Prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays were measured with the EXOGAM array and correlated with fission fragments that were identified in mass and atomic number with the VAMOS++ spectrometer. The measured lifetimes, together with branching ratios, provide $B(M1)$ and $B(E2)$ values for the strongly coupled rotational bands built on the $[422]5/{2}^{+}$ ground state in the Y and Nb nuclei with neutron number $N\ensuremath{\ge}60$. The comparison of the experimental results with triaxial particle-rotor calculations provides information about the evolution of the nuclear shape in this mass region.

Electromagnetic Moments of Radioactive 136Te and the Emergence of Collectivity 2p+n Outside of Double-Magic 132Sn | Nuclear Physics | Scoop.it
Radioactive $^{136}\mathrm{Te}$ has two valence protons and two valence neutrons outside of the $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ double shell closure, providing a simple laboratory for exploring the emergence of collectivity and nucleon-nucleon interactions. Coulomb excitation of $^{136}\mathrm{Te}$ on a titanium target was utilized to determine an extensive set of electromagnetic moments for the three lowest-lying states, including $B(E2;{0}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{1}^{+})$, $Q({2}_{1}^{+})$, and $g({2}_{1}^{+})$. The results indicate that the first-excited state, ${2}_{1}^{+}$, composed of the simple $2p\ensuremath{\bigoplus}2n$ system, is prolate deformed, and its wave function is dominated by excited valence neutron configurations, but not to the extent previously suggested. It is demonstrated that extreme sensitivity of $g({2}_{1}^{+})$ to the proton and neutron contributions to the wave function provides unique insight into the nature of emerging collectivity, and $g({2}_{1}^{+})$ was used to differentiate among several state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. Our results are best described by the most recent shell model calculations.

Exotic neutron-rich medium-mass nuclei with realistic nuclear forces | Nuclear Physics | Scoop.it
We present the first application of the newly developed extended Kuo-Krenciglowa (EKK) theory of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction to shell-model studies of exotic nuclei, including those where conventional approaches with fitted interactions encounter difficulties. This EKK theory enables us to derive an interaction that is suitable for several major shells $(sd+pf$ in this work). By using such an effective interaction obtained from the Entem-Machleidt QCD-based $\ensuremath{\chi}{\mathrm{N}}^{3}\mathrm{LO}$ interaction and the Fujita-Miyazawa three-body force, the energies, $E2$ properties, and spectroscopic factors of low-lying states of neutron-rich Ne, Mg, and Si isotopes are nicely described, as the first shell-model description of the ``island of inversion'' without fit of the interaction. The long-standing question as to how particle-hole excitations occur across the $sd\text{\ensuremath{-}}pf$ magic gap is clarified with distinct differences from the conventional approaches. The shell evolution is shown to appear similarly to earlier studies.
