Nuclear Science: Mapping Out Red Tide - Canadian Nuclear Association

Seafood lovers could one day find their plates dry thanks to climate change. Findings reported on by the Marine Stewardship Council indicate that increasing greenhouse gas emissions absorbed by our world’s ocean are causing them to heat up and become more acidic. These changes threaten the very habitats that fish and other marine organisms like shellfish need to survive.

Hurricane Harvey Makes The Case For Nuclear Power

Hurricane Harvey will be the most costly natural disaster in American history, shutting over a fifth of the country’s oil production. But the Texas nuclear power plants have been running smoothly, making a strong case for a substantial nuclear fleet in our energy mix.

It’s elemental

Atom smashers have recently produced some new elements. Their appearance was brief, but long enough to fill out the periodic table. Lawrence Livermore's Mark Stoyer explains to Big Picture Science how new elements form and how, often, they only last for a millisecond. He discusses how the four newest elements on the periodic table were named. And he discusses the elusive island of stability, which is a term in nuclear physics that refers to the possible existence of a region beyond the current periodic table where new superheavy elements with special numbers of neutrons and protons would exhibit increased stability. Such an island would extend the periodic table to even heavier elements and support longer isotopic lifetimes to enable chemistry experiments. Listen to Stoyer on Big Picture Science, the science radio show & podcast of the SETI Institute.
