Now available: Suggested texts for the English K-10 Syllabus | NSW English K-10 syllabus | Scoop.it

Chief Executive of the Board of Studies, Carol Taylor, recently visited Russell Lea Infants School, Five Dock to launch the Suggested texts for the English K–10 Syllabus. In developing the list of texts, the need to provide teachers with a range of choice was an important consideration. The result is a variety of genres, perspectives and themes with good representation of Australian and international authors, the classics, poetry and plays as well as films, picture books, graphic novels, media and multimedia texts.

Celebrating Us

This 10 week unit of work celebrating diversity has been written for English students in Years 5-9. It is built on programming outcomes  from the NSW English Syllabus: 2014.  It integrates the higher order, creative use of Web 2.0 tools & iPad apps. It utilises selected picture books from the International Children's Digital Library at http://en.childrenslibrary.org to encourage multimodal responses from our diverse learners. It has an associated blog with a wide range of differentiated tasks at http://super6plus.edublogs.org. The big idea underlying the lessons is that together we are stronger, diversity enriches us all and that WELCOME is a wonderful word. There are many more reading, writing and Web 2.0 tasks on the net than you could ever do- so select your favourites from the range of tasks on offer here.

Mr P's ICT blog: Using iPads and Football to encourage reluctant boys to write

Mr P's ICT blog: Using iPads and Football to encourage reluctant boys to write | NSW English K-10 syllabus | Scoop.it

As my role this year involves me teaching across the whole school using a class set of iPads, I feel it is important to really experiment to see how using the iPads can impact across the curriculum and not just within ICT. Consequently, with the Year 5 cohort I put together a project linking Literacy with football. I decided to do this project for two reasons: a) to see whether using the topic of football can engage the more reluctant boy writers in the class and b) to see how well linking digital media and speaking and listening can impact on the children's writing.

Quick Formative Assessment of Student Writing - Classroom 2.0

Quick Formative Assessment of Student Writing - Classroom 2.0 | NSW English K-10 syllabus | Scoop.it

Since reading Bill Ferriter's post on whether or not true formative assessment is possible, I've been wondering how I could make my own formative assessments more efficient. This post features a screencast of me looking at student work for the purposes of formative assessment.

Formative assessment is continuous assessment. In the context of writing workshop, formative assessment occurs during mini-lessons when I ask students to do a small task and I circulate to watch what students are writing. Formative assessment happens as I conference with individual students. And, formative assessment requires me glancing at student work as I prepare for lessons.

Multimodal Modes of Representation in Education: Supporting the Diversity of Learning Styles | ETEC540: Text, Technologies – Community Weblog | NSW English K-10 syllabus | Scoop.it

In today’s century, as we discuss digital literacy, internet literacy, media literacy, and even television literacy (Rosen, 2009); it is clear that literacy is developing new accents that have become difficult to define in a few words. Rosen (2009) stated that “if we expect our children to be competent citizens, compete in the workplace, and lead productive lives, educators and parents need to plant the seeds of media literacy early in the educational arena” (p. 177). The iGeneration (Rosen, 2009) can access information instantly so educators have to find new ways to interact with their digital native students (Prensky, 2010).
