Beta particles are electrons that move very quickly -- that is, with a lot of energy. Beta particles travel several feet when emitted from a radioactive source, but they're blocked by most solid objects. A beta particle is about 8,000 times smaller than an alpha particle -- and that's what makes them more dangerous.

Their small size allows them to penetrate clothing and skin.

External exposure can cause burns and tissue damage, along with other symptoms of radiation sickness. If radioactive material enters food or water supplies or is dispersed into the air, people can inhale or ingest beta particle emitters unknowingly. Internal exposure to beta particles causes much more severe symptoms than external exposure.

Marian Locksley's insight:

BLACK ICE  Russia's ongoing oil spill crisis

For decades, Russia's oil giants have been polluting parts of the country's once thriving landscape, often in secret, spilling oil onto the land and into the Arctic Ocean, poisoning the water and destroying the livelihood of local communities and Indigenous Peoples.

Greenpeace has investigated and documented the ongoing disaster, revealing how the oil seeps into rivers and farmland. This leaked oil spreads and becomes a thick, heavy mire, suffocating plants and animals, and forcing people to abandon the area.

The oil contaminates food and water supplies, and people live with the knowledge that their once clean rivers, forests and air now pose serious health risks.

Komi region oil spill sites

After analysing satellite images to identify spill sites, Greenpeace staff travelled to this and other Arctic and subarctic regions to investigate and document the spills and expose the extent of the damage.  Photos were taken over a three-day period in just one of the many oil spill hotspots in Russia.  >>    http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/campaigns/climate-change/arctic-impacts/The-dangers-of-Arctic-oil/Black-ice--Russian-oil-spill-disaster/

Eco-Pirates or Green Warriors? Greenpeace CEO says charges should...: Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DnNpk6W6zE&feature=youtu.be ;   <<

Published on 17 Oct 2013

Peaceful protest or environmental extremism? Green activists saving the planet or pirates endangering lives? The characterization of Greenpeace's recent campaign on a Russian Arctic oil rig depends on one's political views. But can such controversial actions achieve their noble goals, or are they little more than a dangerous ploy to attract publicity? Kumi Naidoo, the Executive Director of Greenpeace, joins Oksana to wrangle over these questions.

'Hard drugs found' on Greenpeace ship seized by Russia:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-24461644

Greed has taken them to attempt any sort of smear towards Greenpeace, shame on them !

Greenpeace replied: "There is a strict policy against recreational drugs on board Greenpeace ships, and any claim that something other than medical supplies were found should be regarded with great suspicion.

"Before leaving Norway for the Russian Arctic, the ship was searched with a sniffer dog by the Norwegian authorities, as is standard. The laws in Norway are amongst the strictest in the world, and nothing was found because nothing illegal was on the ship."

"Any claim that illegal drugs were found is a smear, it's a fabrication, pure and simple," Greenpeace said.

"We can only assume the Russian authorities are referring to the medical supplies that our ships are obliged to carry under maritime law," it said.
