Extinction Roulette: Fukushima. The consequences, the human toll, have already begun.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Perhaps we will learn that Corporate/Government Neo-Fascism and the power it exerts over the global masses… does not work. Perhaps we will learn that their priorities and objectives are not ours- that they are quite willing to impoverish and kill us all (and themselves) in working their warped, deluded, and dangerous agenda. Perhaps we will learn that we must rise up against those that maliciously seek our collective destruction. Perhaps we will learn that only by such a response might we survive as a species.

Perhaps we will learn that ‘perhaps’ is not enough.

1 November 2013, New York Times, Dan Bilefsky -- "Talks aimed at creating one of the world’s largest marine reserves in the waters off Antarctica ended in failure in the face of resistance from Russia, China and Ukraine, delegates said.

n the talks, held in Hobart, Tasmania, under the auspices of theCommission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, the United States and New Zealand had proposed to create a 500,000 square mile, or 1.3 million square kilometer, ocean reserve in the Southern Ocean and the Ross Sea around Antarctica. The area’s pristine ecosystem helps sustain thousands of species, including whales, seals and penguins, as well as crustaceans and small fish.

The proposal before the marine commission needed support from 24 member countries and the European Union to be adopted, but it fell short because of the objections from the three countries, people at the talks said. ..."

A new analysis shows that Japan's annual hunt of small whales, dolphins and porpoises is unsustainable and could even drive some species to extinction.

Via Gaye Rosier
Marian Locksley's insight:

The report, entitled “Toxic Catch: Japan’s unsustainable and irresponsible whale, dolphin and porpoise hunts,” is published by the UK’s non government affiliated Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and was launched in Tokyo, Japan on Thursday October 31. The report alleges that the Japanese government is failing to take accurate population samples of the cetaceans it hunts and is instead creating hunting quotas based on decades old figures which in turn allows more cetaceans to be hunted while driving the population dangerously low.

Marian Locksley's insight:

Dr Butt said the direct impacts of fossil fuel extraction included noise disturbance, pollution, destruction and fragmentation – splitting up forests or landscapes into fragments too small to sustain wildlife populations.

"Fossil fuel companies can try to return the area to its 'original state', but there are indirect impacts that continue long after the extraction, including the introduction of invasive species, soil erosion, water pollution and illegal hunting."

Marian Locksley's insight:

Chris Packham, the BBC Springwatch presenter and naturalist, has described the situation as a “travesty” and the RSPB is now calling for an urgent review.

Chris Packham said he was “completely unaware of this travesty”. He added: “In these days of widespread decline and the accompanying need for increasingly effective conservation, this perverse anomaly strikes me as particularly inexcusable on any level. The fate of a species should not be imperilled by the murderous desires of a minority. Here is a perfect opportunity for the shooting fraternity to publicly put their house in order and I sincerely hope they do.”

Confusion’ over the legal protection status of the lesser black-backed gullhas allowed culling to continue, despite its population crashing in recent years.

Some experts believe the culling was also partly to protect grouse shooting interests.!

Researchers alarmed by 'puzzling' changes in resident #orcas ~ #changes in the ocean #environment | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
A Vancouver Aquarium researcher is sounding the alarm over what he calls "puzzling" changes observed in the killer whale pods that live off the southern British Columbia coast.

Via Mariaschnee
Marian Locksley's insight:

“Resident killer whales are typically very vocal in the summer but, for the second year in a row, they have been remarkably quiet,” says Barrett-Lennard

“So quiet that we often had difficulty finding them.”

The lack of vocalizations was just one of three unusual changes observed by the cetacean research team. Resident orcas were also seen the past two summers travelling in small groups, farther offshore to find food — behaviour more typical in winter than summer.

At the same time, the Barrett-Lennard says the number of normally transient killer whales, also known as the Bigg's whale, has been increasing over the past 25 years. In the 1990's, resident orcas were sighted much more frequently than Bigg's orcas, but now the number of sightings is nearly equal.

“It’s unclear at this point if the loss of so many matriarchs or the increase in Bigg’s killer whales is having an impact on resident killer whale behaviour, but the changes we’ve seen over the last two years are striking and beg an explanation," says  Barrett-Lennard.
