Is #WhaleWatching ethical? ~ minimise #detrimental impact on your trip... | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
Read Is whale watching ethical?for travel tips, advice, news and articles from all around the world by Lonely Planet (RT @lonelyplanet: Whale watching and some of the best places to do it (if you decide to go) http://t.co/nHt5PlZknk...
Marian Locksley's insight:

The carbon footprint of whale watching trips is massive. Boats hammer the water, churning through thousands of litres of fuel. In some instances, trailers – used when a boat is launched from a beach, not a jetty – can tear up the beaches and the environment.

While this sounds dire, there are ways you can help to minimise the detrimental impact of a whale watching trip:

Choose responsible, registered operators. ‘Responsible’ operators are often scientists and see the trips less as a means for a fast buck, and more as a way of increasing your awareness and knowledge of both whales and the general environment. They provide interesting facts about the cetaceans (as whales are known in scientific speak), from fluke sizes to unique markings.Ask if the operator collects data for scientific use. For example, in St Lucia, South Africa, whale watching boats gather floating whale skin – that has shed – for DNA testing.Don’t expect a whale sighting, nor choose an operator who guarantees one. It’s a privilege, not a right. Be open-minded to learning about other ocean-based aspects – such as fish, birds, tides and winds.

Saying "it's too late" sends the polluters an unspoken message to continue with their deadly work. That is unacceptable.

Second, control pollution. Given time without the violence of human intrusion, the oceans will recover.

What’s the #Condition of the #Pipeline Beneath the #Straits of #Mackinac: VIDEO 5.23mins #OilSlick #Environment | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
This past July, NWF conducted a diving expedition to obtain footage of aging oil pipelines strung across one of the most sensitive locations in the Great Lakes, and possibly the world: the Straits of Mackinac.
Marian Locksley's insight:

The footage shows pipelines suspended over the lakebed, some original supports broken away (indicating the presence of corrosion), and some sections of the suspended pipelines covered in large piles of unknown debris. This visual is evidence that our decision makers need to step in and demand a release of information from Enbridge and PHMSA.

Heightening our concern around this pipeline and the company that owns it: despite having cleared our dive work with the U.S. Coast Guard, several Congressional members, and Homeland Security, our staff and the dive crew had uncomfortable interactions with Enbridge representatives. As soon as our team set out on the water, we were quickly accompanied by an Enbridge crew that monitored our every move. This monitoring did not stop at the surface: Enbridge also placed a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) into the water to watch our team.

If these aging pipelines rupture, the resulting oil slick would cause irreversible damage to fish and wildlife, drinking water, Lake Michigan beaches, Mackinac Island and our economy.

Marian Locksley's insight:

Rivers are also often the endpoint for much of our industrial and urban pollution and runoff. When it rains, chemical fertilizer and animal waste peppering residential areas and agricultural lands is swept into local streams, rivers, and other bodies of water. The result: polluted drinking water sources and the decline of aquatic species, in addition to coastal dead zones caused by fertilizer and sewage overload.

ACCESS TO WATER IS NOT A HUMAN RIGHT

If you think water is essential to life, think again. European and American multinational corporations have said that "ACCESS TO WATER IS NOT A HUMAN RIGHT."

Think about it and do some serious reading on this issue. Bottled water has proven to be nothing more than bottled tap water.

An excellent collection of research work here.

Tuna is being fished to extinction. Despite this, efforts to protect fish stocks are being undermined as legal loopholes on the high-seas have created a multi-million dollar trade in illegal catches. "There is no chain of custody.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Tuna is being fished to extinction. Despite this, efforts to protect fish stocks are being undermined as legal loopholes on the high-seas have created a multi-million dollar trade in illegal catches.

“There is no chain of custody. As soon as the fish is inside the freezing vessel, it’s impossible to know from which vessel it is coming”, Francois Chartier of Greenpeace says of the controversial ‘transshipment law’. It’s one of the biggest loopholes in fishing legislation, which allows small vessels to transfer their catch to big freezing vessels.

It means that out in the middle of the ocean, the lines are blurred over legal and illegal catches, with no way of tracking the fish passed between ships registered in several different countries. So while tuna numbers reach worryingly low levels, their stocks are not being protected.

“The future for the Indian Ocean is pretty bleak. We’ve seen so many vessels chasing so few fish. The catches are dwindling.”

One fifth of fish are caught by huge ships that trawl the seas, catching fish such as tuna in bulk. It leaves little for local fishermen in their much smaller boats, raising concerns about the humanitarian impact coming down the line. As one authority on illegal fishing says: “We have to take measures to keep this fish stock healthy because for billions of people fish is their basic diet.” For Downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65764

Could high-rise #fishfarms revive #HongKong's fishing industry? using #trashfishFeed ! | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
Hong Kong's fishing industry has long been in decline but a new high-tech, high-rise solution may offer hope. (RT @Seasaver: Could high-rise fish farms revive #HongKong's fishing industry?
Marian Locksley's insight:

Making aquaculture environmentally sound is another issue; much of the feed for fish farms comes from live caught "trash fish" -- the price of which has increased in Hong Kong since the trawling ban.

High-tech schemes, like OceanEthix indoor fish farm technology, housed on the 15th floor of a skyscraper 30 miles from the sea, offer some ingenious solutions to aquaculture's problems of sustainability and quality. Using vast tanks to grow out valuable fish for the restaurant trade, the company has developed a method where the water is recycled and fish feed comes from sustainable sources, not trash fish.

The demand for its fish, like live coral grouper, is in good health says Lloyd Moskalik, managing director of OceanEthix, but making it as affordable or cheaper than other products will be key to its success.

"In the long term the fishermen of Hong Kong don't have much of a future," Moskalik says.
