#PolarBear #Expedition Finds Little #Ice and #Few #MotherBears ~ #WWF | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
WWF scientists spent two weeks in April on a research expedition to the islands of Arctic Norway to study polar bears and their habitat. They gathered data on 53 bears total and placed GPS collars on seven females.
Marian Locksley's insight:

But during the last few years, the ice edge is too far away from shore at denning time. And in the southern islands, mothers with cubs are emerging later from dens to find the sea ice—and seals—are already gone.

During this expedition, the team found only two females with cubs, which is cause for concern. However, we need information on polar bear numbers and denning sites over the long-term to really understand the impact of shrinking ice on bears.

These are questions WWF and partners are working hard to answer. Information gathered on this expedition and in the coming year from the satellite collars will help a lot as well as contribute to our understanding of polar bears overall.

A Hong Kong-based wildlife conservation group has rung the alarm that a rare species, the whale shark, is falling prey to a growing US demand for fish oil products. The animal is illegal to catch in most places and illegal to process in China.

But beyond that boundary are the high seas: the stretch of international ocean that nobody owns. And this area is governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Marian Locksley's insight:

The worry is that, without regulation, fragile habitats could be damaged beyond repair.

Environmental damage would be limited, says the co-director of the Seabiotech consortium Prof Linda Harvey from the University of Strathclyde, because most research involves collecting relatively small samples to analyse back at the lab.

“Festive” might not be the best word to describe the atmosphere while dissecting and dismantling a decomposing, 100-plus-tonne blue whale.
Marian Locksley's insight:

My absolute favourite of Saturday’s discoveries was a small, smooth bone that may be one of the animal’s vestigial hind limbs. On living whales, these tiny, useless legs are enclosed within skin: they are an evolutionary hangover from before whales’ terrestrial ancestors slipped back into the sea.

Maybe it's the swirling ocean currents, or maybe it's fact that you're watching tracks of actual whales migrating around the Hawaiian Islands, but this map can put you into some sort of data trance if you watch it long enough.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Dr. Robin Baird of Cascadia Research provided the whale data in this application, which lets you follow sperm, beaked, false killer, and pigmy killer whales as they migrate around the Hawaiian Islands. This data is part of Dr. Baird’s larger research project studying the movements and habitats of whales in this part of the Pacific Ocean.

Adani Group's mine, designed to eventually produce 60 million tonnes of thermal coal a year, has been the focus of ongoing opposition.

Via SustainOurEarth
Marian Locksley's insight:

Opposition to the port expansion and the proposed Galilee basin coal mines has grown in recent weeks. First UNESCO warned it might place the Great Barrier Reef on its endangered list as a result of the port expansion. And last week US ice cream company Ben & Jerry’slaunched a Save the Reef campaign that prompted authorities to call a boycott from Australian consumers, as they claim it is “propaganda” that has damaged the reputation of the reef, jeopardizing jobs and tourism dollars.
