Oceans cover 70% of the earth’s surface, and provide 99% of the world's living space, but mankind is slowly destroying a key source of food, the planet's thermostat and a home to millions of species.

OSLO (Reuters) - Heavy rains from the Amazon to Australia have curbed sea level rise so far this century by shifting water from the oceans to land, according to a study that rejects theories that the slowdown is tied to a pause in global warming.

#Sharks and #Rays #threatened worldwide ~ #overfishing to blame! | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
We have heard a lot of about sharks recently.
Marian Locksley's insight:
Bleak picture

The results paint a bleak picture of the status of this important group of ocean predators. Approximately one quarter of the known species are estimated to be threatened according IUCN Red List categories and criteria, mostly as a result of overfishing.

Possibly even more concerning is the result that 47% of species were assessed as Data Deficient, meaning that we don’t have enough information to properly assess their status. Clearly there is a need for a lot more science to help manage a group that is obviously under threat.

Many people who hear these grim statistics will think of shark finning (where the fins of sharks are cut off at sea and the bodies dumped) as the likely reason for the declines. While finning is a major factor in the decline of some populations it is far from the main reason that many of these species are threatened with higher chances of extinction.

We don’t know nearly enough about thresher sharks. All three species are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Flickr/Raven_Denmark

Biology researcher joins with other scientists to chart intensive fishing's collateral damage. Accidental entanglement in fishing gear is the single biggest threat to some species.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Seabirds, sea turtles and marine mammals such as dolphins may not appear to have much in common, other than an affinity for open water. The sad truth is that they are all unintended victims – by-catch – of intensive global fishing. In fact, accidental entanglement in fishing gear is the single biggest threat to some species in these groups.

Experienced fish may be critical for keeping migrating populations on track, a study finds.
Marian Locksley's insight:

The researchers based their model on three factors: the strength of the social links between the fish, the fraction of informed individuals (fish that were older and had previous knowledge of migratory routes and destinations), and the preference these informed individuals showed for certain destinations. In theoretical applications of this model, the team found that social cohesion between fish and the presence informed individuals were the two most important factors. Without a threshold of informed individuals, the group became uncoordinated.

The researchers speculated that these observations might speak to an evolutionary advantage.
