Uncorking East #Antarctica yields unstoppable sea-level rise ~ e! Science News | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
The melting of a rather small ice volume on East Antarctica's shore could trigger a persistent ice discharge into the ocean, resulting in unstoppable sea-level rise for thousands of years to come. This is shown in a study now published in Nature Climate Change by scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). The findings are based on computer simulations of the Antarctic ice flow using improved data of the ground profile underneath the ice sheet.

#Vancouver refuses non-binding referendum on #Whales in #captivity which is never #naturally big enough! | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
Vancouver city council has refused to hold a non-binding referendum on banning whales and dolphins in captivity at Vancouver Aquarium.
Marian Locksley's insight:

City councillors also severely castigated Green party Coun. Adriane Carr for trying to get the plebiscite motion on to the Nov. 15 civic election ballot, saying she was effectively usurping the authority of her elected park board colleagues.

The decision came at the end of a long meeting Wednesday in which a handful of activists opposed to the aquarium’s captive cetacean program told city councillors that residents deserve the right to vote.

It follows the recent call from two park board commissioners, Sarah Blyth and Constance Barnes, for the aquarium to phase out its beluga whale program and to stop captive breeding. Mayor Gregor Robertson also stated publicly that he believes whales and dolphins shouldn’t be kept captive.

But in this case, city council was strongly reluctant to tread into the park board’s jurisdiction, especially after the board on Monday instructed its staff to prepare a report by July on the aquarium’s operations and how other aquariums operate their captive cetacean programs.

Robertson was not in council for the debate.

Keeping beluga whales in captivity at the aquarium serves a higher purpose, especially with the rapidly-changing climactic conditions in the Arctic, he said. The aquarium is in the middle of a $100-million upgrade that has already been approved by council.

Marian Locksley's insight:
Warnings for shipping

Molnia said a system for such tracking of glaciers could provide important warning for shipping in the region as calving, and the formation of icebergs, increases.

Calving – which can occur in lakes and rivers, as well as the sea – is a complex phenomenon, and alone it is not an indicator that a glacier is retreating. Some of Alaska's glaciers, in fact, have retreated so far from the sea that they no longer calve. And Molnia noted a few glaciers that are advancing have significant calving activity – most notably, Hubbard Glacier, with growth fueled by a massive mountain catchment area.

Killer whales and other marine mammals likely hear sonar signals more than we've known.
Marian Locksley's insight:

"These sounds have the potential to affect animal behavior, even though the main frequency is above what they primarily hear.

It may be that environmental assessments should include the effects of these systems. This may not be a major issue, but it deserves further exploration," added Southall.

Previously posted on CNN.com. On March 31 the World Court in the Hague ruled that Japan's “scientific” whale-hunting was baloney. It ordered Japan to revoke its “scientific research” permits to all its ships, effectively tying ...
Marian Locksley's insight:

Japan says it will abide. I wish it would take this opportunity to bow gracefully out of something so dishonest and unfit for modernity. But I expect a fragile truce, and only a partial one.

That’s because Japan has a history of creatively bending the rules beyond the breaking point of international intent. Authorities and whalers seem committed to killing whales first and finding a rationale second, and it would be no surprise if the program were tweaked in some meaningless way so they could excuse continued hunting. Or they might say the court’s ruling applies only in Antarctic waters and not the Pacific, where they also hunt. Or they might simply ignore the ban like their suppliers Norway and Iceland.

Come with me to three faraway places and you might see why I feel deeply and strongly about whales.

"There's so many humpback whales, there's so many traps, do the numbers," he said.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Part of the problem is that the commercial crabbing season is overlapping with the humpback whale migration in the bay. That means there's more food for the whales and more opportunity for crabbers, too.
