10 bottlenose #Dolphins arrive at #Xiamen Gaoqi Int'l Airport ~ Don't do well in flight! | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it

A batch of 10 little bottlenose dolphins arrived at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport on the evening of 26th May. It is said to be the first time that Xiamen has imported large aquatic animals.

Via Wildlife Defence
Marian Locksley's insight:

After a 3-hour-long journey from Japan, the dolphins arrived at Xiamen airport at about 8:00pm in the evening. 4 of the dolphins were cleared by customs and were transported to Shishi, while the remaining 6 continued on by plane to Beijing.

Despite the long journey, the 10 dolphins appeared to be in good condition. According to Gong Xiao, an experienced dolphin trainer, the dolphins are all about 3 years old. 4 of them will be quarantined at their new home in the Shishi dolphin base before they make their debut at Shenzhen’s Luohu Ocean Park next year.

Dolphins are mammals with delicate skin. Therefore, the transportation condition for them is very demanding. According to reports, the animals were carefully placed in ten 3-meter-long steel boxes. In addition, their skin was also covered with Vaseline, together with moisturizing cloth and ice cubes.

#New #biodiversity study throws out controversial scientific #theory | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
Scientists have released ground-breaking findings that dismiss the 'Neutral Theory of Biodiversity'. The theory has dominated biodiversity research for the past decade, and been advocated as a tool for conservation and management efforts. The study, the largest of its kind, covers a broad range of marine ecosystems on Earth and has important implications for how marine conservation areas are managed.

World's Wildlife Vanishing at Breakneck Pace -- And Guess Who's to Blame?
Huffington Post
It turns out that the t-shirt slogan that "plants and animals die to make room for your (and my) fat ass" is true.
Marian Locksley's insight:

The study confirms that species are going extinct at a pace not seen in tens of millions of years, and unlike past extinction events, the cause is us.

We've already lost so many species, including the passenger pigeon, Ivory-billed woodpecker, Steller's sea cow, sea mink and many more. Now that the crisis is speeding up, we wait in dread for the next species to disappear. What species will it be--the polar bear, American wolverine, Hawaiian monk seal or some other unique plant or animal never to be seen again?

After all, we depend on the very same things that all of these species that are dying do--namely water to drink, air to breath and space to carry out our daily lives. The fact that we're losing species at such an alarming rate daylights the degree to which we're degrading this planet that has nurtured us and should serve as a clear warning that our own future quality of life is in danger.

Late last year, the circus came to Hengqin.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Not everyone was cheering.

A Chinese environmental group called The Nature University and 31 local and international animal welfare organizations signed an open letter to China’s Minister of Culture, Cai Wu, and the Governor of Guangdong province, asking them to cancel the animal performances. In the Zhuhai train station nearby, Animals Asia, an international organization that monitors zoos and safari parks in China, displayed posters crowd-sourced through a competition, with the theme “Not Born to Perform.” “[We wanted] to let the Chimelong Group know this wasn’t something they could just get away with,” says David Neale, Animals Asia’s Animal Welfare Director. The posters stayed up for a week before the ad company pulled them down and the circus went on as planned.

The killer whales recently captured in Russia bring the worldwide total of captive killer whales to 53, according to Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

More:  The push to ban marine parks in the U.S. can be greatly accredited to the growing popularity of the film, “Blackfish.” There is a bootleg version of the film floating around China, but an official translated version has yet to be released. If producers of “Blackfish” can make this happen, surely some positive change can come into place in China.... >  http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/two-more-wild-caught-killer-whales-captured-and-placed-in-marine-parks/
