#Octopuses Rewrite Their RNA to Beat the Cold

#Octopuses Rewrite Their RNA to Beat the Cold | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it

This octopus from the Arctic tweaks its RNA to make nervous system proteins that work better in the cold. The Antarctic octopus edits its RNA at nine sites that change the amino acid sequence of the potassium channel, the researchers report online today in Science. One of these sites, known as I321V, was particularly important for adapting to the cold: The change more than doubles the potassium channel's closing speed.

As expected. I am sure people will find some organisms changing their genomes as well to adapt to environment. - Jong
Dr. Stefan Gruenwald's comment, March 24, 2012 12:53 PM
Yes, I was thinking the same thing. I just wonder that these modifications don't get written back into the DNA of germ cells and each generation has to "discover" favorable RNA edits again and again.

#SeaSlug Has Disposable Penis ~ exposed #nudi *

The peculiar sea slug discards its penis after sex, grows a new one, and has sex again the next day.

Via Amocean
Marian Locksley's insight:

Almost all of these creatures, which are also known as nudibranchs, are thought to be "simultaneous hermaphrodites". This means they have both male and female sexual organs and can use them both at the same time.

Sea slugs are not the only animals who abandon their penis.

They do have very very complicated biology”

Orb weaving spiders are known to lose their male organs after sex, as does a sea creature called the periwinkle and land slugs belonging to the genus Ariolimax.

However the researchers believe that Chromodoris reticulata is the first creature known that can re-grow its appendage - and its disposable penis gives it a sexual advantage.

#Scientists Discover World’s Most #Abundant #Virus in the #Ocean ~ A type of #MarineBacteria #SAR11

Via Kathy Dowsett
Marian Locksley's insight:

Researchers announced today the discovery of the most abundant virus in the world. Rather than attacking humans however, the virus, called a Pelagiphage, attacks the most abundant microorganism in our oceans, a type of marine bacteria called SAR11, with significant implications for how carbon moves between the atmosphere and our oceans.

The study was published in the scientific journal Nature today.

Dr. Steve Giovannoni, whose lab at Oregon State University made the discovery, said in a press release, "There's a war going on in our oceans, a huge war, and we never even saw it."

Until now.

"This is an important piece of the puzzle in how carbon is stored in the sea," he continued.

The online wildlife magazine for those who like wildlife, wildlife news and watching wildlife, plus a guide to UK nature reserves.
Marian Locksley's insight:
Whale oil to fuel whaling ships is a gruesome and surreal proposition: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2013/feb/11/whale-oil-fuel-ships

An Icelandic whaler, Kristján Loftsson, is powering his whaling ships using "biofuel" composed of 80% diesel – and 20% whale oil. Loftsson claims the oil is additionally friendly to the environment as it is rendered out of whale blubber using heat from Iceland's volcanic vents.

The story might seem a bizarre development even in the Alice in Wonderland world of modern whaling, where Japanese whaling fleets claim to be conducting "scientific research" and the US, while striking a vehemently anti-whaling stance, nonetheless supports aboriginal hunting of bowhead whales that might otherwise live as long as 200 years.

These are very unique formations that happen along the shore line of Wellington Ontario Beach

Ice Volcanoes are formed when an ice layer forms along the shore line and waves from Lake Ontario push through causing a volcano shaped cone on the top of the ice layer.

when the waves crash under the cones shapes it causes water to erupt through the top.

Few people are aware of or understand the severity of the threats that manta rays are currently facing around the world.

Year after year thousands of manta rays and their close relatives the mobula rays, are being killed and removed from the oceans virtually unnoticed, and all for body parts that makes up a tiny percentage of their total body mass.

The body parts in question are their gill plates, which are made of cartilage and enable the rays to filter tiny plankton animals from the water.
