Wildlife spotting in Antarctica is a lottery.  There are no game park enclosures or zoos.  There are no park rangers waiting for a “release the whale for tourists” call.  There are no guarantees. And that’s what makes it so special.

Boom In Jellyfish Linked To Overfishing http://t.co/gwmYWHWunz
Marian Locksley's insight:

Jellyfish have free rein

Jellyfish predators, such as tuna and sea turtles, are disappearing due to overfishing. However, jellyfish are primarily taking advantage of the overfishing of small pelagic fish. Just like these cnidarians, sardines, herring, anchovies and more feed off zooplankton. Thus, they represent their main competition for food. In areas where too many of these fish are caught, they free up an ecological niche.

Jellyfish now have free rein and can thrive. Furthermore, small fish eat the eggs and larvae of jellyfish. Therefore, under normal conditions, they regulate the population. In their absence, there is nothing to stop the proliferation of these gelatinous creatures.

Marian Locksley's insight:

Since 2010, hundreds of the federally-protected birds have washed up dead or injured on Eastern Carolina shores. Wildlife investigators said they don't know what's causing the pelicans' deaths, but evidence suggests their killings are intentional.

The North Carolina Wildlife Federation is offering a reward of almost $10,000 for information. They can be reached at  919-833-1923.

The best tools for tracking how well pollution-reduction laws are working may be seabirds.
Marian Locksley's insight:

A major part of the problem is that regulatory agencies are constantly playing catch-up to industry, Elliot said.

Most new products are developed and manufactured in China and other nations where regulation is sparse!

Products are already on the market by the time problems show up.

Marian Locksley's insight:

After five years of delay, the federal government is finally proposing to protect more than 739 miles of critical habitat for threatened loggerhead sea turtles on their nesting beaches along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts -- where they have been laying eggs for centuries!

The area spans 84 percent of all known nesting habitat for loggerheads from North Carolina to Florida to Mississippi. Read more about loggerheads and download the fact sheet here.

Add your own comments to the letter below about sea turtles and the need to protect beaches for nesting adults and emerging hatchlings.

Malaya - Business Insight News Online gives you up-to-date news in the business world and current happenings around the globe.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Current fishing levels are dangerously high for forage fish and for the predators and industries that depend on them.

A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that the vast majority of the world’s forage fish stocks are either considered fully exploited, with no room for safely increasing the catch, or they are already overfished and in need of rebuilding.

Forage fish is the fish near the bottom of the aquatic food chain;  often overlooked, they are vital to healthy oceans and estuaries.

Make your voice heard in support of Everglades National Park's preferred management plan.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Audubon's Everglades Scientists working in Florida Bay found that increasing boat traffic across shallow seagrass habitat contributed to a decline in wading bird nesting in Florida Bay. One of the GMP’s most important proposals is to designate a greater area as a “Poll and Troll” zone, where boats can enter using a push poll or a non-combustion trolling motor.

This will avoid scarring and killing sea grass beds that support fish and wildlife as well as minimizing disturbance to nesting, foraging, and roosting water bird species like the iconic Roseate Spoonbill.

Just 35 Devils Hole #Pupfish Remain—Does #Extinction Loom? | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
One of the world’s rarest fish species just got a lot rarer.

Via Amocean
Marian Locksley's insight:

One of the world’s rarest fish species just got a lot rarer. The latest twice-annual count of tiny Devils Hole pupfish (Cyprinodon diabolis) at their sole habitat in Nevada has revealed just 35 of the critically endangered fish remain, down from 75 this past fall. This is the lowest count since the species was federally protected back in 1967.

Devils Hole pupfish live exclusively in a deep geothermal cavern in Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, where their population has undergone precipitous declines over the past several decades for reasons that remain unclear.

The 25-millimeter fish appear to be adapted by both high temperatures (33 degrees Celsius) and the water’s low oxygen content, but little else about them is understood by science. Efforts to breed them outside of Devils Hole have not been fruitful, and two captive populations died out in 2006.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), there are now too few of them to risk transferring any more of the fish from their natural environment.

The Irish government is proposing one of the largest salmon farms in the world. Activists and locals are raising environmental concerns though, including the possibility the farm will make other local fish turn pink.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Many of the 270 people that live on Inis Oirr see the salmon farm not as a potential economic driver, but rather as a possible environmental nightmare that could fatally harm the island's tourism sector.

During the summer, the island's population swells to about a thousand as people come to the island to enjoy the temperate weather and scenic beaches.

60-year-old Padraic Mailer has lived on Inis Oirr his entire life. He's concerned waste from the salmon farm will pollute the island's beaches. Several studies have shown waste from farms can travel long distances and wash ashore, polluting the land.
