Marian Locksley's insight:

Sea turtles play important roles in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. They feed on sea grasses, sponges, and jellyfish, which can help to maintain habitats that serve as nurseries for other species and support healthy fish populations.

Excessive catches by vessels from China threaten the livelihoods and ecosystems in West Africa, in particular (RT @volkwyr: West Africa impacted by overfishing RT @sciam: China Estimated to Dramatically Underreport Its Overseas Fishing Catch
Marian Locksley's insight:

It is a whopper of a catch, in more ways than one: China is under-reporting its overseas fishing catch by more than an order of magnitude, according to a study published on 23 March.

The problem is particularly acute in the rich fisheries of West Africa, where a lack of transparency in reporting is threatening efforts to evaluate the ecological health of the waters.

Turning #fishingNets into #energy ~ #emissions are #capped ...go go #green | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
Hawaii is turning derelict fishing nets into energy. (RT @SuzanneTWN: Really neat story, turning a deadly #ocean danger into clean, green #energy.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Landfill space is hard to come by in Hawaii, so one company has come up with an innovative idea to cut down on the state's trash.

They're turning fishing nets and other garbage into energy and reducing a threat to marine life at the same time.

According to NOAA, approximately 300,000 water mammals worldwide die each year after coming into contact with discarded fishing nets that have been dumped into the ocean.

Fishermen have been retrieving the nets and ditching them in garbage bins, and Hawaiian steel company Schnitzer Steel has offered to start cutting up the nets, which are then hauled to Covanta Energy.

Covanta burns the nets, along with other garbage produced on the island of Oahu.

The heat from the combustion boils the water processing steam that drives a turbine that generates electricity.

Eighty percent of Oahu's man-made garbage winds up at Covanta. The company processes up to 3,000 tonnes of waste per day while feeding a portion of the community's electricity needs.

Emissions from the plant are capped, making it one of the greenest ways to handle trash.

End #Whaling in #Norway! - The Petition Site ~ Pls sign & share thxu

Norway is the only country besides Iceland who still conduct commercial whaling in direct defiance... (End Whaling in Norway!
Marian Locksley's insight:

Norway is the only country besides Iceland who still conduct commercial whaling in direct defiance of the 1986 IWC's international moratorium. Their quota for the 2013 season is 1,286 Minke whales which the Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs says population is now large enough to justify the country's limited catch. The whaling season begins April 1st and ends on August 1st. In 2011 less than 50% of their intended quota was achieved.

We need to put the pressure on Norway and tell them its time to bring about change. We now have scientific evidence and information that Cetaceans have feelings like our own and suffer as we do. Whaling is not needed to sustain a living in this day an age and its barbaric tactics should be no longer tolerated! Its time to step forward and be a voice for those who need us now more than ever!

National Geographic, April 2013 Issue

Weighing up to 1,200 pounds or more, the West Indian manatee looks something like a chubby dolphin or small whale, though it’s related to neither. (In fact, manatees share a common ancestor with elephants.) Manatees lack the blubber layer that allows whales to tolerate cold; in water below 68°F, they begin to weaken and die. The subspecies found in the United States is the Florida manatee, which disperses into coastal areas of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico; in winter, when sea temperatures drop, they congregate inland at natural springs and other sources of warmth, including power plant discharge pipes.... http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/04/manatees/white-text

In the early 1940s, California fishers hauled in a historic bounty of sardine at a time that set the backdrop for John Steinbeck's Cannery Row novel. But by the end of the decade the nets came up empty and the fishery collapsed. Where did they all go?

According to a new study led by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, the forces behind the sardine mystery are a dynamic and interconnected moving target.
