Marian Locksley's insight:

Scientists from the biochemical company DuPont have created a strain of yeast that can produce abundant amounts of omega-3 oils, a dietary supplement most commonly found in fish. According to their study in the journal Nature Biotechnology, the genetically-modified yeast could be the solution for a global overfishing crisis that has arisen due to the growing popularity of the supplement.

The yeast-borne lipids are already being sold as a vegan alternative to fish-extracted oils.

Overfishing: a threat to marine biodiversity http://t.co/rLGMbmJYRS
Marian Locksley's insight:

“Overfishing cannot continue,” warned Nitin Desai, Secretary General of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, which took place in Johannesburg. “The depletion of fisheries poses a major threat to the food supply of millions of people.”

The Johannesburg Plan of Implementation calls for the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), which many experts believe may hold the key to conserving and boosting fish stocks. Yet, according to the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) World Conservation Monitoring Centre, in Cambridge, UK, less than one per cent of the world’s oceans and seas are currently in MPAs.

The magnitude of the problem of overfishing is often overlooked, given the competing claims of deforestation, desertification, energy resource exploitation and other biodiversity depletion dilemmas. The rapid growth in demand for fish and fish products is leading to fish prices increasing faster than prices of meat.

As a result, fisheries investments have become more attractive to both entrepreneurs and governments, much to the detriment of small-scale fishing and fishing communities all over the world. In the last decade, in the north Atlantic region, commercial fish populations of cod, hake, haddock and flounder have fallen by as much as 95%, prompting calls for urgent measures. Some are even recommending zero catches to allow for regeneration of stocks, much to the ire of the fishing industry.

VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help carry out a beach clean at Dunnet as part of a national initiative which takes place with the help of two kayakers who are rowing around the UK coastline.

The event is part of the Around Britain 4 Britain charity challenge which sees Lee Pooley and Nick Arding circumnavigate the UK mainland by Kayak.

The duo are raising money for CLIC Sargent and Marine Conservation Society, and completing 16 beach cleans around the UK on their way.

Highland Council countryside rangers are looking for some help with their beach clean at Dunnet Beach tomorrow night (Wednesday).

Countryside Ranger Paul Castle said it would be a great event with lots of benefits for those who take part.

“Firstly, it will clean Dunnet beach which helps to ensure that both people and wildlife can use the environment safely.

“Secondly, the beach clean will help the Marine Conservation Society gather important information about beach litter.

“Last but not certainly least, it should be great fun for everyone who attends.”

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Seadrift Centre at 5pm where bags, gloves and equipment will be provided.

Marian Locksley's insight:

The Bloody “Unholy” Abomination Continues in The Faeroe Islands

Commentary by Captain Paul Watson

One Hundred and Fifty defenseless pilot whales died yesterday in the Ferocious Isles.

And entire family, males, females, pregnant females, juveniles, babies, every last one of them viciously slain.

This perversion continues on a group of islands devoid of empathy, where they cloak themselves in the mantle of righteous Christianity to justify their cruelty.

The beaches run scarlet with hot blood beneath the cold stark towers of the hypocritical Faeroese churches.

The Old Testament states it is a sin to eat the flesh of the whale.

Yet these “Christians” pick and choose which of God’s rules they will abide by.

Leviticus 11:10 clearly states that whales may not be eaten:

Leviticus 11:10: And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you.

A whale has fins but does not have scales. It is an abomination before God to eat the flesh of the whale.

The Faeroese regard their culture as devoutly Christian yet they live with this blatant contradiction that is an affront to their own God.

I have adapted a Phil Och’s song, Here’s to the State of Mississippi to the Faeroes:

Here's a jeer to the Faeroe Islands
For underneath her waters, the devil draws no lines
If you drag her deep cold fjords, nameless bodies you will find
The beaches of the island have witnessed a few thousand crimes.
Their calendar must lying, when it reads the present time.

So, here's to the sea you've torn out the heart of
Faeroes, find yourself, another planet to be part of

Here's a jeer to the people of the Faeroe Islands.
Who say that outsiders just don't understand,
And they tremble in their shadows at the violence of the Grind,
The sweating of their souls can't wash the blood from off their hands,
They smile and shrug their shoulders at the cruelty of the Grind man.

Oh, here's to the sea you've torn out the heart of,
Faeroes, find yourself, another planet to be part of.

Here's a jeer to the schools of the Faeroe Islands,
Where they're teaching all the children that they don't have to care,
And that for the whales they should not have any sympathy,
And every single classroom is a mystery of psychology,
There's nobody learning such a foreign word as empathy.

Oh, here's to the sea you've torn out the heart of
Faeroes, find yourself, another planet to be part of

Here's a jeer to the Grind masters of the Faeroe Islands
They're drinking their vodka as they stumble to the shore,
Their eyes are wide with blood lust as they bellow and they roar,
No they don't like taking prisoners in their bloody little war,
Behind their Christian masks there are murderers and more.

Oh, here's to the sea you've torn out the heart of
Faeroes, find yourself, another country to be part of

And, here's a jeer to the doctors of the Faeroes Islands,
Who know that mercury is cutting their children’s lives short,
They're guarding their culture, and ignoring the reports,
Oh, prevention is a stranger when the truth they will abort,
To protect their barbaric despicable blood sports.

So, here's to the sea you've torn out the heart of
Faeroes, find yourself, another planet to be part of

And here's a jeer to the government of the Faeroe Islands,
In the swamp of their sillyaucracy they're always bogging down,
And brain damaged idiots are posing as the mayors of the towns,
They're hoping that no one sees the bloody sights and hears the dying sounds,
And the speeches of the Prime Minister are the ravings of a clown.

So, here's to the sea you've torn out the heart of
Faeroes, find yourself, another planet to be part of

And here's a jeer to the laws of the Faeroes Islands,
Politicians will gather in a circus of delay,
While the image of the nation is drowning in an ocean of decay,
Expectant mothers are infected, I've even heard them say,
Yes, denial can be classic in the Faeroese way.

So, here's to the sea you've torn out the heart of
Faeroes, find yourself another planet to be part of

And here's a jeer to the churches of the Faeroe Islands,
Where the cross, once made of silver, now is caked with blood,
And the Sunday morning sermons pander to their bloodlust,
The embarrassed face of Jesus is bleeding in the mud,
Satan seems to be the only God they can trust.

So, here's to the sea you've torn out the heart of,
Faeroes, find yourself, another planet to be part of.
