It sounds like the plot to a low-budget horror movie but the discovery of a 21cm fish off Sweden's southern coast should unsettle any man thinking of going for a swim there. (Ouchy!
Marian Locksley's insight:

A small piranha-like fish with a fierce reputation has been found in European waters for the first time!

15.8.13  ~  The recent capture of a fish species off the coast of Denmark that is rumored to sometimes mistake human male genitalia for nuts sparked fears of “testicle-eating fish” invading Scandinavian waters—and even led experts to caution men to keep their swimsuits well tied. But the scientists say that their warning wasn’t intended to be taken seriously, and that it’s highly unlikely that swimmers will encounter a pacu, as the fish is called.

The mammal – believed to be a striped dolphin – became stuck in shallow water in rocks on Kilkee Beach.

Via Wildlife Defence
Marian Locksley's insight:

There were also reports of other dolphins in the area last night, according to Berrow. He was told by locals that another had also been encouraged to swim back out to sea, after almost becoming beached in shallow water. Berrow says there may have been as many as four in the area:

Scientists are working to find out if an infectious agent may be to blame, since some of the dolphins appeared to have lesions in their lungs.

An “unusual mortality event” has been declared due to the “unexpected and significant die-off” that has spanned the coasts of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia since early July, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries unit.

Philippe Cousteau: 'Blue Halo' Reserve Would Protect Marine Life In Sargasso ...

Via Gaye Rosier
Marian Locksley's insight:

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Officials from the Pew Charitable Trusts and one of famed underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau's grandsons were in Bermuda on Thursday calling for the creation of the Atlantic's biggest marine reserve.

Advocates say it would safeguard significant parts of the Sargasso Sea, a 2 million-square-mile (3 million-square-kilometer) body of warm water in the Atlantic that is a major habitat and nursery for numerous marine species. It would potentially start 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Bermuda's shore and ring the territory, ensuring that anglers could still fish offshore.

Philippe Cousteau, an ocean campaigner who is frequently seen discussing marine issues on U.S. television, said the Blue Halo reserve would affect few Bermuda fishermen, since most don't venture beyond 25 miles (40 kilometers) from shore. If anything, he said, it would improve catches since research has indicated that fishermen eventually haul in bigger catches when a nearby marine reserve provides a safe haven for fish to grow.

Bird eggs reveal urban pollution
Phys.Org
The rivers of the Welsh valleys suffered severe pollution during the area's mining and industrial heyday; in the 1970s they were among Europe's most contaminated watercourses.
Marian Locksley's insight:

the cleanup hasn't gone nearly far enough. The scientists found large amounts of several pollutants, including some that are no longer being produced but are taking a very long time to disappear. And because the rivers are now generally cleaner, pollution-sensitive animals like salmon, otters, kingfishers and dippers are returning only to be exposed to potentially damaging chemical cocktails.
