FRESH LEAK #Fukushima #nuclearleak 'can get a lot worse! whats already leaked ~ Pls see below also... #IOC #Tritium | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
The radioactive leak at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant is far from under control and could get a lot worse, a nuclear energy expert warned.

Fukushima tritium levels spike 15-fold in three days: http://rt.com/news/fukushima-tritium-levels-spike-738/

<Tritium: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritium

Tritium is potentially dangerous if inhaled or ingested. It can combine with oxygen to form tritiated water molecules, and those can be absorbed through pores in the skin.

The low energy of tritium's radiation makes it difficult to detect tritium-labeled compounds except by using liquid scintillation counting.

^^^

hearing from experts and scientist here today is that they estimate 219,000 tons of nuclear waste has leaked into the Pacific Ocean over the past two years which up until 14 days ago TEPCO had kept a secret. After it was reported that at 300 tonnes (300 long tons; 330 short tons) of “heavily contaminated water” has been leaking from a storage tanks into the ocean daily. They also state the ground water in the region has been contaminated with high levels of radiation, but since the government stepped in to take control of the site relieving TEPCO the government has said little about the events taking place here.

It is an outrage for the government to remain silent. Two scientist I spoke to on the beach tell me maybe the government has been silent because no one can yet begin to image the impact this debacle will have locally as well as globally. Scientist on the site admit this is a major event but they too can only speculate on what will come tomorrow.

The government felt it was "unclear" how the incident would develop and that information provided by the Japanese government was "not enough to predict future developments".

South Korea already had a ban on 50 fisheries products from Fukushima and seven surrounding prefectures in place.

Japan, however, said fisheries exports were safe for consumption.

"We are conducting strict safety controls based on international standards. If (radiation) readings are above the standards, shipment will be stopped," top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said.

JAPAN NUCLEAR CRISIS: THE DANGERS OF RADIATION: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMmaduq-5bw&feature=youtu.be&nbsp << please watch !

U.K.-based nuclear energy expert Antony Froggatt told CNBC that the problem at the Fukushima plant was growing – and could haunt Japan's nuclear regulators for a number of years.

"There are many problems ahead and you can look to Chernobyl that happened in 1986 and see that they're still trying to deal with containing radioactivity around the site," said Froggatt, who is a senior research fellow at Chatham House think tank.

Level 3 ratings from regulators were rare, he said, adding that if the problem deteriorated, the authorities may need to appeal for international assistance

He said the Japanese government was "acutely embarrassed" by the leak, adding the country needed to pay more attention to the global media and Japanese public. In the meantime, the leak would impact the whole Japanese economy as the government continued to import fuel, he said.

The leak could further damage local industries already impacted by the disaster, according to the experts, and could cause a shutdown of the fishing industry around Japan if fish are found to be radioactive

#Escaped #farmedSalmon change #wildSalmon | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
For the first time, scientists have managed to quantify how much escaped salmon have interbred with wild salmon in Norwegian rivers. These results provide a basis for reassessing the impact that escapees from fish farms have on Norway's wild salmon.

Via Mariaschnee
Marian Locksley's insight:

"Methodological limitations have created uncertainty as to how big the problem is. However, we have now developed a stronger tool that can measure the percentage of farmed fish that has interbred," says Kevin Glover, senior scientist at the Institute of Marine Research in Norway.

Surveyed 20 rivers

Scientists investigated 20 rivers along the Norwegian coast for this latest study. These rivers had been studied before and genetic changes in the native populations were discovered then. These previous studies hypothesized that interbreeding by escaped farmed fish was the reason for the change. Now scientists can actually confirm that farmed escapees were the cause.
