Marian Locksley's insight:

Hundreds of thousands of people in Japan have been forced to evacuate their homes amid fears a massive typhoon could wreak havoc.

Typhoon Man-yi struck the mainland on Sunday, packing gusts of more than 160 kilometres per hour, and doubling the region’s annual rainfall.

At least two people have been found dead and more than 100 others hurt:: http://www.euronews.com/2013/09/16/typhoon-hits-japan-raising-fears-over-fukushima/

Japan’s nuclear authority is to conduct radiation surveys to measure the long-term effect on marine resources on the seabed off the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant that has been leaking toxic water since 2011, the Japanese media reports.

As TEPCO has been struggling to contain contaminated water at the plant, the government has stepped in to take over some of the responsibilities, arguing that the utility seems incapable of fixing the matter on its own.

The consequences of the nuclear catastrophe in Japan have triggered international debate after Tokyo won the right to host the 2020 Olympic Games, beating Madrid and Istanbul.

Just hours before Tokyo was chosen on September 7, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reassured the International Olympic Committee that radioactive water leakage from the wrecked nuclear plant was "under control” and "will never do any damage to Tokyo"

His speech caused a wave of criticism in Japan. On Saturday, the front-page of national newspaper Asahi Shimbun read "Contaminated water 'control' running astray," "Credibility of prime minister's message to overseas is shaking."

Hikariko Ono of the Prime Minister's office defended Abe's statement, saying that the monitoring results conducted off the Fukushima coast showed undetectable radioactivity.

A senior TEPCO official Kazuhiko Yamashita contradicted the Prime Minister on Friday by saying the radioactive water leakage at the crippled Fukushima plant ‘was not under control’.

#Rare #Photos of Migaloo the Albino #HumpbackWhale ~ Fabulous* | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it

via @pdjmoo

For whale watching enthusiasts, sighting a massive aquatic mammal as it leaps out of the sea and recedes back to its underwater habitat is a thrilling experience. However, few can say that they've spotted one whose body is entirely white. For those lucky enough, they may have witnessed a passing albino humpback whale along the Queensland coast in Australia. In fact, the documented whale has been given the name Migaloo (an Aboriginal word meaning "white fella") and is protected under Australian law.

Thought to be the only albino humpback whale since his discovery back in 1991, Migaloo has gained a following with people eagerly sharing any photos or video footage they capture of the marine mammal as it makes its journey from Antarctarica to Australia and back. Though they're few and far between, considering how often people capture images on a daily basis, Migaloo's image is a stunning example of the diverse creatures our world has to offer.

They call it the "white plague," and like its black counterpart from the Middle Ages, it conjures up visions of catastrophic death, with a cause that was at first uncertain even as it led to widespread destruction -- on marine corals in the...
Marian Locksley's insight:

Now one of the possible causes of this growing disease epidemic has been identified -- a group of viruses that are known as small, circular, single-strand DNA (or SCSD) viruses. Researchers in the College of Science at Oregon State University say these SCSD viruses are associated with a dramatic increase in the white plague that has erupted in recent decades.

White plague is one of the worst. It causes rapid tissue loss, affects many species of coral, and can cause partial or total colony mortality. Some, but not all types are associated with bacteria. Now it appears that viruses also play a role. Corals with white plague disease have higher viral diversity than their healthy counterparts, the study concluded.
