How Deep is The CR Shark Finning Rabbit Hole? A Commentary from our founder @CaptPaulWatson http://t.co/d1kFrPzUYa Pls RT
Marian Locksley's insight:

COMMENTARY FROM OUR FOUNDER CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON

After years of patiently investigating and exposing the corruption in Costa Rica, my efforts are now slowly beginning to pay off and it is now becoming quite obvious that the charges against me in Costa Rica are politically motivated.

In some ways, the fact that Costa Rica decided to sic Interpol on me is now looking like it will have a positive result. It has given me a larger voice to address the conflict of interests, the bribery and the corruption in Costa Rica that
allows the illegal trade in shark fins to continue.

If in the event I am taken as a prisoner back to Costa Rica there will be no doubt that I will in fact be a political prisoner and not a criminal.

Finally the real criminals, those responsible for the illegal slaughter of hundreds of thousands of sharks are now under investigation and I am convinced that the corruption in Costa Rica goes all the way to the top and to the office of the President herself.

Published on 19 Sep 2013

In August of 2013, Sea Shepherd Australia Director Jeff Hansen visited the town of Broome, in Western Australia, to visit the community that fought alongside Sea Shepherd during Operation Kimberley Miinimbi, which ensured the protection of the worlds largest Humpback whale nursery off the coast of James Price Point.

During his trip, Jeff visited James Price Point, spent time with many of the groups and locals that fought hard for the protection of their land, spent a morning out at sea with a newborn Humpback whale and its mother and encountered a washed-up juvenile Humpback whale.

Sea Shepherd Australia was also able to host the local community one evening, and presented videos documenting the work that Sea Shepherd carries out not only in Australian waters, but in the Galapagos, the Gulf of Mexico, and Antarctica.

South Korea earlier this month expanded an extant import ban to include all fisheries products from Fukushima and seven surrounding prefectures over concerns about the 300 tons of radiation-contaminated water leaking into the Pacific Ocean daily from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 power plant.

South Korea’s fisheries ministry also stated that a new radiation inspection certificate would be required if even a minuscule dose of radioactive material is detected in any fisheries or animal product from any other part of Japan.

#Mantas, Devil Rays Butchered For #ApothecaryTrade ~ Now #Identifiable

#Mantas, Devil Rays Butchered For #ApothecaryTrade ~ Now #Identifiable | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
Since dried filters from the mouths of filter-feeding rays hit apothecary shop menus in Asia – the thought being that eating ground-up filters will cleanse one's liver – there's been no way to know which of these gentle-natured rays was being slaughtered...
Marian Locksley's insight:

Now, scientists with the University of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories have discovered enough differences in the filters to be able to identify the giant manta and eight of the devil rays using the part from inside their mouth that has been dried and is being sold.

"There is no historical or traditional medical use of these filters and there's no scientific evidence they will help your liver filter out toxins. Still there are thousands of these ray filters in the markets, especially in Indonesia," said Misty Paig-Tran, who studied the filters in detail while earning her doctorate in biology at the UW

People have been looking at this group of animals for protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, but there has been no way to know which of the groups need protection because the filters are cut out and the rest of the animal is discarded, she said.

Paig-Tran is lead author of the cover story in the September 2013 issue of the Journal of Morphology about the distinctive filters of these rays.
