Puget Sound Jellyfish show up in areas of poor water quality
The Oregonian
In some cases, overfishing has reduced forage fish, which leaves the food supply wide open for jellies.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Questions remain about how humans might be encouraging jellyfish and whether short- and long-term climate variations may shift things in favor or against jellyfish versus forage fish.

"The important thing," said Rice, "is that people are trying to understand this stuff. It is exciting to compare notes and talk about how things are being pushed around at the bottom of the food chain. Our observations so far are consistent with going down the jelly road."

Researchers reveal the secrete of an octopus's unique movement, revealing how the animals co-ordinate their eight, flexible arms.
Marian Locksley's insight:

The study is the first detailed analysis of exactly how octopuses manages to move without a rigid skeleton.

How octopuses control and move their soft bodies is of interest to engineers who aim to design biologically inspired robots.

"People want to build soft robots for medical purposes and rescue operations," said Dr Guy Levy, one of the researchers involved in the project.

Such soft-bodied, octopus-inspired arms would no be limited by fixed joints, he explained. This could be useful to access narrow, difficult to reach spaces - perhaps getting help to people trapped at the scene of a collapsed building

#DeadWhale washes ashore on #Pacificabeach ~ #necropsy on Wednesday

Experts with the Marine Mammal Center said what appears to be an adult sperm whale has washed ashore in Pacifica.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Many Pacifica residents don't remember the last time they saw a dead whale on one of their beaches. They've seen other types of animals wash ashore in recent months.
"Sea lions wash up periodically, a lot of babies recently, but I've never seen a whale that size on the beach here," said Greg Concepcion, a Pacifica resident.
Residents now want to know what caused the whale to die.
"There was like 50 congregating in Monterey Bay and we were expecting to see them start showing up down here, but it's a shame this is the first one we've seen," said Jim Auler, Pacifica resident.
Researchers plan to perform a necropsy on Wednesday

A specially-designed robot has become stranded after capturing the first grainy images from inside one of the melted reactors at Japan's doomed Fukushima nuclear plant. The robot also picked up lower than expected radiation readings, according to Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), possibly paving the way for wireless devices to explore the site. Large volumes of cooling water continue to leak from the damaged reactors, causing contamination and hampering the cleanup process. Three reactors at the plant went into meltdown and hundreds of thousands had to be evacuated.

I am from Palau, a small island, roughly 160 square kilometers, in the Pacific Ocean. While my island is small, it attracts visitors from around the world to experience and enjoy its stunning underwater marine life. We have some of the healthiest remaining coral reefs in the world. I’ve lived on islands for all of my life, but recently visited the island of Hong Kong—what a contrast. It’s hard to believe it’s an island. It struck me as the most densely populated, most clean, most orderly, and most developed Asian city I’ve ever been to. But when I looked closer at Hong Kong, I saw evidence of the island life I am used to. I saw people in large and small boats trying to catch whatever fish is left in the local waters. It made me realize how similar I am to these Hong Kongers: we are, in our own ways, people of the sea. We like to eat fish and seafood. In fact, Palauans and Hong Kongers eat more fish and seafood than the rest of the world. A Trip to the Fish Market As part of my visit to

#MinkeWhale #hunt starts off north-eastern #Japan coast #ScientificResearch <JapanLIES ! | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
SENDAI (Japan) — A fleet of four whaling ships left a port in north-eastern Japan today (April 10) to hunt a maximum 51 minke whales in coastal waters in the period up to May 26 as part of the government’s scientific research whaling program in the north-western Pacific Ocean.
The Association for Community-Based Whaling, a nonprofit organisation set up for coastal research whaling, plans to hunt in a 90km radius area from Ayukawa port in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, to examine the animal’s impact on marine resources by checking the stomach contents and other facets of the game.
During a ceremony at the port marking the departure of the whaling ships, Mr Yoshiichi Shimomichi, head of the Association for Community-Based Whaling, expressed hope that the research whaling will be a success and will help resumption of commercial whaling.
In March last year, the International Court of Justice ruled that Japan’s research whaling in the Antarctic Ocean violated the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, ordering Japan to halt its research whaling in the Antarctic.
In response to the ruling, Japan reviewed parts of its research whaling program in the north-western Pacific and scaled down operations last year.
Japan’s “research” whaling has been a target of international criticism as meat from the hunted animals is placed on the market after scientific examinations are completed. Critics say it is a cover for commercial whaling.
Coastal research whaling is conducted off the port in Ishinomaki in the spring and off Kushiro, Hokkaido, in the fall. KYODO NEWS
