#Prehistoric #Forest Discovered By #Divers Off English Coast ~ #Norfolk | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
In this era of satellite imaging and Google Earth, it often seems as though possibilities for discovery no longer exist.
Marian Locksley's insight:

There is one final frontier, however, that still remains largely unknown —the uncharted depths of the world’s oceans. For many divers, the possibility of discovering the planet’s last submarine secrets is one of the sport’s greatest attractions, and for two UK divers, that fantasy recently became a reality. While carrying out a survey of marine life off the Norfolk coast last summer, Sea Search volunteers Dawn Watson and Rob Spray stumbled across something completely unexpected, the remains of a submerged forest that experts now believe dates back to the Mesolithic period, approximately 10,000 years ago. Concealed for millennia by tons of silt and sand, the forest was only uncovered last winter in the wake of severe storms that ravaged the UK’s east coast. According to a television interview with Watson, she and her buddy had not planned to dive that specific area on the day the discovery was made, but after their plans to visit a shallower site were interrupted by rough conditions, the pair made the decision to venture deeper to escape the resulting surge.

#Oregon #Minnow Is First Fish Taken Off #Endangered List | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A tiny minnow that lives only in backwaters in Oregon's Willamette Valley is the first fish to be formally removed from Endangered Species Act protection because it is no longer in danger of extinction, officials said T...
Marian Locksley's insight:

"With every species that is lost - be it a large, charismatic mammal or a little-known, 3-inch-long minnow - we leave our children and their children beyond a more impoverished planet, and deprive them of the benefits from healthy ecosystems with vibrant biological diversity," Hannan said in prepared remark at the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge outside Corvallis.

The refuge is one of 80 locations around the state harboring some of the 140,000 known Oregon chub. Hannan stood in for Director Dan Ashe, who could not leave Washington, D.C., due to a snowstorm.

The action came 22 years after the 3-inch-long fish was first listed as an endangered species, and five years after it was upgraded to threatened.

Paul Henson, state director for Fish and Wildlife, said the Oregon chub demonstrates that a lot of species can be brought back from the brink of extinction, if key needs are met, such as a safe place to live, even in an urban landscape.

"This doesn't mean that all of a sudden it's hands off, and we never need to do anything for them," Henson said. "But we can at least put them back in the group of species that need attention, but don't need to go into the emergency room" of the Endangered Species Act.

The Oregon chub had practically disappeared from the Willamette Valley as the swampy backwaters and beaver ponds it depends on were drained to control flooding and create farms and cities over the past 150 years.

Those that survived became easy prey for non-native predators, such as bass and bullfrogs.

A major survey finds that marine animals have been getting bigger, on average, since the Cambrian period - and not by chance.
Marian Locksley's insight:

"We've had at least 50 high school students working on it over the last five years," Dr Heim told BBC News.

"It would have taken many, many, many more years doing it on my own!"

Eventually the team had amassed information on more than 17,000 groups of species, called genera. This represents over 60% of all the animal genera ever to have lived.

It was detailed analysis of this formidable set of figures that revealed the trend towards increasing size.

But Dr Heim and his colleagues say the consistent trend does not mean that every single genus of animals evolved to grow larger.

Instead, the branches of the family tree that were populated by larger animals divided many more times - diversifying and expanding so that the ocean gradually built up a greater variety of bigger and bigger beasts.

'Mystery #amphibian' sought in #Vietnam | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
Environment officials are at a loss to identify metre-long amphibian pulled from a pond in northern Vietnam.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Photos of the metre-long animal were posted on Facebook by a man who says he pulled it from a pond near his home in the Vinh Phuc region, Thanh Nien News website reports. But local environment officials don't know what it is, despite searching records of native species. While it bears some resemblance to a giant salamander, native to neighbouring China, officials say even if it's a related species there is no explanation for how it came to be found hundreds of miles away in northern Vietnam. And tracking it down now could prove tricky - the man who uploaded the images told Thanh Nien News that he has sold it, and won't give any more details.

Officials have now called in the police to try and trace it, the head of the region's forestry department tells the website. "No matter who is keeping it, we will try to bring the animal to Vietnam's Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, where experts will know what to do with it," says Nguyen Van Tam. The images have been widely shared on social media and have provoked a storm of comments, with many people worried about the creature's fate. "Look at the tray and the chopping board," one user is quoted as saying, before suggesting that it could have ended up on someone's dinner table.

With California's wild Coho salmon populations down to 1% of their former numbers, there's growing evidence that beavers - long reviled as a pest of the waterways - are essential to restore the species, writes Maria Finn. In the process, they raise water tables, recharge aquifers and improve water quality. What's not to love?
Marian Locksley's insight:

In ongoing research that covered six years, Pollock and his colleagues showed that river restoration projects that featured beaver dams more than doubled their production of salmon.

Can the animals help bring back the Coho salmon? "Absolutely", Pollock says. "They may be the only thing that can."

Marian Locksley's insight:

High Sea Fishing Must Be Ended.

For three decades I have been calling for an international ban on high seas fishing. Now finally, reputable ocean scientists are now calling for just such a ban.

There is simply not enough fish in the sea to continue supplying an ever-increasing human population and our domestic animals like cats, salmon, pigs, fur bearing animals and chickens that consume some 40% of the fish taken from the sea.

...

All heavy gear fishing must be banned. All super trawlers, trawlers, gill netters, long-liners, drift netters and industrialized fishing operations must be banned. All plastic gear i.e. nets, lines and traps should be banned.

Foreign fishing trawlers need to be banned from fishing within the territorial waters of other countries.

Illegal fishing vessels must be seized and destroyed.

All subsidies by governments to fishing corporations must be ended.

All domestic salmon farming and other forms of destructive aquaculture practices must be banned.

If fishing is restricted to artisanal fishing by small communities there may be hope for oceanic eco-systems.

If not, the oceans will be dead zones by 2048.

No fish for anyone anywhere. No fish for Orcas and dolphins. No fish for seals. No fish for the species that depend upon them for their survival.

When the fish die, the ocean die and when the ocean dies, we die!

That is the reality that we face this century and the choices must be made now. Action must be taken now.
