Marian Locksley's insight:

A juvenile humpback whale that had become stranded in shallow water in La Paz Bay was rescued Sunday by authorities and citizens who used a rope and boats to pull the cetacean into deeper water.

According to Octavo Dia, the rescue effort lasted two-plus hours and the whale seemed to swim freely away despite the long and very dramatic ordeal.

(The accompanying Cabovision video shows part of the rescue effort, including the whale being pulled from the shoal. It does not show the whale swimming to freedom.)

"The effort followed the protocol for marine mammal rescue," Octavo Dia reported. "The struggle to save the whale lasted over two hours, but the successful results incited elated uproar in the concerned witnesses."

The whale had become stranded beyond El Coromuel Beach during low tide. El Coromuel is north of La Paz, which is the capital of Baja California Sur. Among those assisting in the rescue effort were members of a local stranding network.

The race is on to save The Last Ocean

Sea Shepherd Australia will be doing their part at the end of the year by protecting Patagonian Toothfish. Why is it important that we protect this species and the Ross Sea as a whole?

THE ROSS SEA is the most pristine marine ecosystem on earth. Unlike most of the world’s oceans it has remained free from widespread pollution, invasive species, mining and overfishing. It is the most productive stretch of water in the Southern Ocean providing a home to an incredible array of animals, many found nowhere else on the planet.

What's more, the Ross Sea still has all it's top predators - including large fish, whales, seals and penguins. The Ross Sea is one of very few intact large marine ecosystem left, and as such, it is a living laboratory providing scientists with the last chance to understand how a healthy marine ecosystem functions.

Marian Locksley's insight:

The answer given could not have been more clear:

It appears that some will heal, and some will scar. It seems obvious that an animal with a scar has survived the injury that caused the scar. A similar question applies to the renal lesions, which if severe and extensive, may be associated with renal failure. It seems plausible that in some cases these types of injuries will cause delayed mortality.

In short, from the drive process itself to capture, confinement and isolation, cetaceans suffer terribly, both psychologically and physically. Even when released, the scars that remain and the damage endured, can kill.
