Feds study impact triathlon will have on wildlife at Merritt Island refuge
Florida Today
A threatened gopher tortoise crosses a road near a shuttle launch pad.
Marian Locksley's insight:

A bicycle race planned to roll through the refuge surrounding Kennedy Space Center and loop around the space shuttle launch pads hinges on whether the feds think birds, snakes and other frequent refuge visitors can bear so many bikes.

An estimated 1,500 people from 14 countries would participate in the bicycling portion of the 2013 Rocketman Florida Triathlon, planned to pedal through the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge May 5.

TAIJI, Wakayama Prefecture--A Japanese filmmaker is taking issue with the view that Taiji is evil, a perception that has “unilaterally” spread around the world since the award-winning documentary “The Cove” spotlighted the town’s dolphin hunt.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Courtesy of @blog4cetaceans  :::

Sadly there is no balanced view on the Taiji ‪#‎dolphin‬ capture and hunt. The award winning documentary maker condemns WAZA's actions against dolphin drive fisheries. The article reads she has been studying the hunt since the year 2010! Hasn't she seen enough dolphin suffering to see there is nothing good about Taiji's actions, and attitude about dolphins. Only the law can stop the blood shed in ‪#‎TheCove‬. ‪#‎Tweet4Dolphins‬ ‪#‎Tweet4Taiji

Matching grant enables you to double your donation! End Slaughter of Dolphins for Shark bait! Each year 15,000 dolphins are brutally killed for use as shark bait. This crime can be stopped with your help. (Warning: graphic images) BlueVoice, in partnership with Mundo Azul, has documented the brutal slaughter of up to 15,000 dolphins by Peruvian shark fishermen. Dolphins are harpooned when they come to ride the bow of the fishing boats then clubbed to death. The dolphin is cut into pieces for use as shark bait. The fins of the sharks taken are sold to Asia to make soup.We have footage of this horrific process. Because it is illegal to kill dolphins in Peru we believe we can end this dolphin mass murder by exposing it on international television and at conferences such as the International Whaling Commission. We will also show the film theatrically in Peru. We now need funds to do additional shooting and to finish the film. The film will be highly dramatic and follows Mundo Azul president Stefan Austermuhle, as he goes to sea under highly dangerous conditions to obtain the evidence of dolphin slaughter and massive overfishing of sharks.
See the video for a full explanation of this project and the damning footage of the dolphin hunt WARNING, HIGHLY DISTURBING!

Unilever boss urges world leaders to #ReduceCarbonOutput - BBC News | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
The chief executive of Unilever, Paul Polman, urges governments to set clear targets to force low-carbon innovation.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Mr Polman said Unilever had faced business costs €300m-to-€400 million (£216m-to-£316m) higher than normal due to extreme weather.

Along with Virgin’s Richard Branson and vehicle industrialist Ratan Tata, he is in a group called The B Team, which urges governments to bring greenhouse gas emissions to zero by the middle of the century.

This group will form a strong presence at the business summit, which is expected to attract more than 1,000 people to Paris. The French capital is also the location for the world leaders’ climate summit in December.

'Risk issue'

Another group in Paris, RE100, will announce new members today. It is aiming to encourage 100 world-leading firms to obtain 100% of their energy from renewable sources.

Nick Mabey, who runs the green think tank E3G, said: “We’ve seen the underpinnings of climate politics grow. Now we have a $5tn (£3.1tn) low carbon economy.

"We have the G20 discussing the risks to financial markets from climate policy and a real understanding of how climate change is hitting countries and cities. And in the end it’s the politics of the real economy that’s going to drive action.

A 95-metre foreign freezer-factory trawler has arrived in Australia, and it’s starting to fish in our waters right now! Sign the petition to Stop the Trawler for our marine life and fishing future.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Our worst fears have been realised with news that the 95-metre industrial factory trawler the Dirk-Dirk (which has just arrived in Australia, now reflagged as the Geelong Star) has killed eight dolphins and two seals on its first two fishing trips in Australian waters.

Please sign the petition to stop this freezer-factory trawler causing unknown damage to our marine life and coastal fishing communities. More than 20,000 Australians have already signed. Now we’re asking our supporters all around the world to make their voice heard.

Unbelievably, the Abbott Government has welcomed this foreign factory trawler, despite huge opposition from recreational fishers, conservation groups, tourism businesses and local communities alike.

It’s the largest factory trawler to be fishing in Australia, and it’s already causing damage to our incredible marine life.

Changes to EU birds and habitat directives ‘single biggest threat’ to biodiversity and species, say groups as they launch their campaign to block the move
Marian Locksley's insight:

PLEASE TAKE ACTION HERE:  http://www.mcsuk.org/what_we_do/Wildlife+protection/What+we+do/Threat+to+EU+nature+laws

“The habitats and birds directives are the foundation of nature conservation across Europe and are scientifically proven to be effective where properly implemented,” said Kate Jennings, the head of the RSPB’s site policy unit, and chair of the campaign. “The directives deliver demonstrable benefits for nature, as well as significant social and economic benefits.”

Protected sites in the UK were being lost at a rate of 15% a year before the directives, but this declined to just 1% a year afterwards, Jennings said.

Action plans drawn up under the birds directive have also helped nurture the recovery of over half of the globally endangered bird species targeted, according to research by Birdlife International. These include griffon vultures, dalmatian pelicans, Bonelli’s eagles and the common crane.

The EU’s environment department is unenthusiastic about the review and officials stress that they want to modernise rather than bury the conservation rules.
