Marian Locksley's insight:

Protection measures have failed to stop around 100 million sharks being fished every year and a third of all shark species are now threatened with extinction, conservationists say.

Many are caught for their fins, a delicacy in Asian soup. The fins are sliced off and the animals are often dumped alive overboard to die of suffocation or eaten by other predators.

Protection for endangered sharks may have lagged because they are relatively unloved compared to animals such as pandas or lions, even though they usually kill fewer than 10 people a year worldwide.

An estimated 97 million sharks, or 1.41 million tonnes, were caught in 2010 compared to 100 million in 2000, according to a study in the journal Marine Policy, the first to estimate the number of sharks killed annually.

"We are now the predators. Humans have mounted an unrelenting assault on sharks and their numbers are crashing throughout the world's oceans," said Elizabeth Wilson, manager of global shark conservation at The Pew Charitable Trusts.

#Cetaceans ~ Use 'sound searchlights' & Maybe stop being #trappedinNets ...Say researchers :) | Rescue our Ocean's & it's species from Man's Pollution! | Scoop.it
Porpoises finely adjust the size of the beams of sound they use to hunt - using sound like a searchlight to trap their prey, a study finds.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Researchers think that other whales and dolphins may use the same technique to trap a fish in their beam of sound in the final phase of an attack.

This could help prevent porpoises, whales and dolphins' prey from evading their capture.

By revealing these acoustic secrets in detail, researchers are hoping to develop ways to prevent porpoises, and other toothed whales, from becoming trapped in fishing nets.

Eighteen years of satellite data reveal an acceleration in the thinning of many of Antarctica's floating ice shelves.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Prof David Vaughan is the director of science at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), and was not involved in the Paolo paper.

He commented: "We need three components: we need to understand the changes in the grounded ice; how the floating ice is behaving; and finally how the oceanographic conditions under the floating ice have changed. With those three things, we have the basis for building really good models. Ten years ago, we didn't have any one of those elements. Today, we've made good progress on two, but on the oceanographic side we're only just beginning."

BAS recently placed moorings in the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica to gather data on ocean conditions. In the same sector, BAS also sent a sub under the floating shelf ahead of Pine Island Glacier to better understand how water moves under the ice.

The record-breaking endurance swimmer Lewis Pugh discusses the possibility of an Antarctic Ross Sea marine reserve with the Russians.
Marian Locksley's insight:

"The relationship between the US and Russia and the United Kingdom and Russia is very strained. This is the most serious crisis that these parties have faced since the Cold War. There are no bilaterals happening at this stage."

As part of a series of Antarctic swims, this month Mr Pugh swam further south than anyone has swum before. Breaking his own record, he said that the Bay of Whales in the Ross Sea was "the most terrifying place" that he had ever swum. The average sea temperature was -1C , with an air temperature of -37C.

The Ross Sea Marine Protected Area (MPA) has been discussed for the last four years and it has failed four times. The last proposal was vetoed by Russia and China.

It would be the size of the UK, Germany and France put together, and needs 24 countries and the EU all to agree.

#Phuket officials waiting for #Bangkok's word on #illegalFishingShip v @CaptPaulWatson

PHUKET: Authorities in Phuket are waiting for word from Bangkok on what to do with the alleged illegal fishing vessel Taishan, held at anchor off Phuket’s deep sea port since March 15.
Marian Locksley's insight:

Courtesy of @CaptPaulWatson ::

Thailand Must Confiscate the KUNLUN and its Cargo

The KUNLUN (TAISHAN) is one of the Bandit 6 that have plundered the waters of the Southern Ocean with impunity for a decade.

Thailand now has the opportunity to send a strong message to poachers on the High Seas that Thailand’s ports are not places where pirates can fence their illicit cargos.

...

Last year the THUNDER was detained in Malaysia and released with its illegal cargo after paying a fine that was relatively small compared to the value of the contraband in their holds.

If Thailand does the same with the KUNLUN, it will simply encourage these poachers.

The captain of the KUNLUN has apparently escaped and returned to Peru. Agents from the Spanish company Vidal Armadores were in Phuket working behind the scenes in their attempts to clear the ship and cargo.

The good news is that the investigation in Phuket is being led by Police Lt. Col. Panya Chaichana of the Marine Police who has been leading investigations in human trafficking on fishing vessels. He has a good record.

The shipping Company seems to be complicit in this illegal operation despite their denials. From the article:

“South Services, meanwhile, has denied any wrongdoing. A company representative said, under condition of anonymity, “The Peruvian captain has already flown home and a new Indonesian skipper and crew are now in Phuket. The ship did not do anything wrong.

“Before I agreed to represent this ship I checked their certificates and the people on the ship and established that none of them were on any blacklist.

“I also checked the ship’s name and established that it was previously called the Funkau, not the Kunlun.

“The only problem is with the product in the containers. Nothing appeared wrong or weird about the online Phuket Customs registration. If it had, I would not have taken on this job.”

How can it be credible that a ship that is on the Interpol Purple list is accepted as legal by a legitimate shipping agency. The record of the TAISHAN (KUNLUN and now FUNKAU) is well documented. This company should be investigated thoroughly by Thai authorities to see what the role of Vidal Armadores was in working with South Services to clear this poaching vessel into Thailand with false papers and false cargo declarations.

I sent a message to South Services today asking how it is that they could accept papers as legitimate from a vessel on the Interpol Purple list as a known toothfish poacher.

THE POACHERS ON THE KUNLUN HAVE BEEN BUSTED

THAILAND HAS RESPONDED TO INTERNATIONAL CONCERNS

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society applauds the Royal Thailand Customs Investigation and Suppression Bureau for taking action against the poaching vessel KUNLUN. Thailand has acted and the captain of the KUNLUN has been arrested and the ship is detained.

...

Captain Jose Alberto Zavaleta Salas, a citizen of Peru reported the cargo as 182 tonnes of grouper, valued at about 15 million baht. However, experts have confirmed that the ship had in fact offloaded 182 tonnes of Antarctic toothfish, valued at about 179mn baht.

Mr Salas has been charged for falsely reporting goods to customs. This has been confirmed by Royal Thai Customs Investigation and Suppression Bureau (ISB) team leader Charoen Chamniklang.

Mr Salas also faces charges for falsely reporting the ship’s flag and registration by switching from the name KUNLUN under the flag of Equatorial Guinea to the name TASHAN under the flag of Indonesia.

The handler that received the fish, South Services Co Ltd, has also been charged for its role in illegally importing the fish into Thailand.

The THUNDER now in its 100th day of pursuit by the BOB BARKER will face the same treatment when it arrives in whatever port it decides to enter. Sea Shepherd will report it's intentions so there will be no sneaking into a small remote African port in the dead of night to offload their illegal cargo.

An alert is out in Asia ports for the arrival of the other toothfish poachers encountered by the New Zealand Navy and the Sea Shepherd ship SAM SIMON.

The THUNDER is like one of those high speed police chases. No matter where they go the police follow and they always get caught. It's always a mystery as to why they just keep fleeing. Desperation, fear, confusion, perhaps, but they always get caught. The THUNDER is running low on fuel and their crew of virtual slave labour are not happy. The BOB BARKER has been resupplied but the THUNDER has been cast adrift by their Spanish bosses in Galicia who are scrambling to erase any possible ties between their company and this ship and crew who have served their illegal purposes for so long. The Captain of the THUNDER and his officers must be feeling lonely, neglected and very insecure at the moment. No fuel, no provisions, no instructions, no assistance. But there is a way out for them. They need only surrender their vessel to the authorities where they can make a deal to finger their Spanish bosses in return for leniency and a place in a witness protection program.

I believe the THUNDER's days are almost over. They must realize by now that no matter how long it takes, the BOB BARKER will continue to tail them.

Just before Christmas, the notorious pirate fishing vessel "Thunder" was found by conservationists at work in the Antarctic. Once spotted, it fled. Nearly 100 days later this epic chase off the coast of West Africa is still underway.

98 Days of Chasing the THUNDER

It was a shock for the the crew of the THUNDER and joyful relief for the crew of the BOB BARKER when the Sea Shepherd ship SAM SIMON arrived today with supplies for the the BOB BARKER'S crew. Fresh vegetables and fruits from Mauritius and extra fuel.

All hope on the THUNDER that the BOB BARKER would run out of fuel and supplies were dashed with the appearance of the SAM SIMON.

...

And if that were not enough to sour the countenances of the officers on the THUNDER, yet another ship appeared. This time the fishing vessel ATLAS COVE owned by Austral Fisheries.

The AUSTRAL COVE arrived to show solidarity with Sea Shepherd and today it was a sight to see indeed with the THUNDER being followed by the BOB BARKER, the SAM SIMON and the ATLAS COVE.

The fishermen onboard the ATLAS COVE are well aware of the damages caused by the illegal fishing operations that take millions of tons of fish from the sea without regulations, without oversight and with impunity.

At 0600 hrs (UTC) on the 25th of March 2015, the F/V Thunder was at position: 06 Deg, 11' South and 004 Deg, 07'  West on a course of 306 T and making a speed of 7.4 knots.

Today the Sydney Morning Herald carried a story about the continuing pursuit.

Captain Peter Hammarstedt of Sweden on the BOB BARKER and Captain Sid Chakavarty from India on the SAM SIMON and their respective crews have orchestrated the most successful disruption of illegal fishing activities in history.
