Nine elements of digital citizenship

Nine elements of digital citizenship | January Utah Geographic Alliance Newletter | Scoop.it
“ Check out http://digitalcitizenship.net!”
Via Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc. (GTAV)
Utah Geographic Alliance's insight:
As teachers who are using technology in our classrooms it has become our responsibility to help students understand these "rules" or ways to manage the digital world in their lives. Especially, those about what should and should not be posted where and making them understand there is no more anonymity when it comes to the internet. Everything can be copied, tracked etc. and that as such they need to make good choices about who they want others to see them as on the internet FOREVER, as the choices they make now can effect their future.

What would you Do?

"Guy brings his white girlfriend to a barbershop in Harlem and gets hated on by a black hairdresser... Does Anyone Step In To Check Her?"
Via Seth Dixon
Utah Geographic Alliance's insight:
There are a number of these videos available all of them provide scenarios of discrimination and test what cultural norms have taught us, and people's reactions to everyday situations where those norms are broken. Could provide a great lesson on teaching students to help others, or teach students to stand up for what they believe in, but it the videos help show the underlying current of some problems we still have here in the United States.

19 Things You'll Only Know If You Studied [or traveled] Abroad

19 Things You'll Only Know If You Studied [or traveled] Abroad | January Utah Geographic Alliance Newletter | Scoop.it
“ Because as someone once famously said, "the best things you learn aren't learned in a classroom." 1.”
Via Mr. David Burton
Utah Geographic Alliance's insight:
I tell my students to "get out"! Some of them look at me offended until I explain that what I mean is that I can't teach them very much about the world from our classroom. It's easier today because I bring speakers in from other places, show videos, play music, bring in foods, and they are exposed to more cultures around them than ever before but as long as they stay safe in America surrounded by other people like them they can't know the world. So, I tell them to plan on leaving as often as possible and not on some cruise that only shows them places that have been pre-planned that I am the first to agree a classroom is no substitute for seeing, doing, experiencing the world first hand.

Judge strikes down part of Utah polygamy law in 'Sister Wives' case | January Utah Geographic Alliance Newletter | Scoop.it
Ruling in the "Sister Wives" lawsuit, a judge has struck down part of Utah's polygamy law.
Utah Geographic Alliance's insight:
As teachers how do we handle important but very hot button issues with our students? I would love to know more about what you did? You are welcome to visit the APUtahGeography.com page for more resources as well as a teacher blog anytime! http://www.economist.com/news/united-states/21592633-strong-year-gay-marriage-advocates-ends-surprise-well-always-have-utah The link just above is to an article about Utah's ban on same sex marriage being overturned, it includes a map of where same sex marriages are allowed and where they are not. As Utah found itself in the spotlight of these two marriage related debates this last December my students had many questions about what the different levels of government do. So if teaching a government class or including religious or Utah or U.S. Geography questions in your curriculum the above sights can be informative. However, I had my students write a document based essay on the topic in which they had to provide evidence for all their statements and this proved to be an excellent activity in teaching my students how difficult it can be to leave out your own opinions when writing as my students all had very strong opinions on these issues one way or another. I had my students write as I did not think they would mature enough to handle an open discussion on the issues and was grateful I did not allow that after reading some of the essays.

Utah Geographic Alliance's insight:
Wondering how twitter can benefit you and your students? One way is to create a classroom twitter page that let's students communicate with you or each other about things in class. Post helpful articles, and reminders there. One huge benefit for you as a teacher is connecting with other teachers across the nation. Many of whom are the very best in their fields through #edchat which allows you to participate in the discussions listed here for new questions and ideas you have. You can pretty much always find a teacher who can answer any question plus there are often great discussions that foster brand new thinking in education and put you ahead of curve in terms of learning the latest and greatest education information. Via Mr. David Burton
Utah Geographic Alliance's insight:
Creates a discussion on borders, security, barriers, and why we choose walls as a means to keep people in or out. My students enjoyed the discussion including the scene from World War Z where Israel believes itself to be safe because of the walls it has built but the zombies find a way in and that false sense of security is worse than if there were no walls. This interactive provides great opportunity to discuss these issues.

Utah Geographic Alliance's insight:
One of the founding families of the German State had their land taken during WWII and is still fighting for its return to them. The town denies Nazis having taken it. It is amazing how history shapes the geography of a people, that those harmed by location displacement of WWII seem to struggle still with the very important of that very important constant .
