Synthetic chemist David Nichols: Legal highs - the dark side of medicinal chemistry; Nature journal

Synthetic chemist David Nichols: Legal highs - the dark side of medicinal chemistry; Nature journal | Media & Academia (archive) | Scoop.it

I have published papers about numerous molecules that probably have psychoactive properties in humans. It seems that many of these are now being manufactured and sold as 'legal highs'. I first became aware that unknown amateur chemists were watching my papers more than a decade ago... Although some of my results have been, shall we say, abused, one cannot know where research ultimately will lead. I strive to find positive things, and when my research is used for negative ends it upsets me... Without my knowledge, MTA was synthesized by others and made into tablets called, appropriately enough, 'flatliners'. Some people who took them died....it left me with a hollow and depressed feeling for some time.

New Psychoactive Substances & Early Warning Systems

Dr David Caldicott, a specialist in emergency medicine at the Nevill Hall hospital in Abergavenny, Wales, talks about recent and newly emerging psychoactive substances (sometimes called 'legal highs'). He also discusses existing drug monitoring systems, looking at their strengths and weaknesses.

David then describes a new initiative in Wales which provides early warning and monitoring of new psychoactive substances. The Welsh Emergency Department Investigation of Novel Substances Group (WEDINOS) offers to test substances which when taken have resulted in emergency hospital admissions and give feedback to users about what the drugs actually are.

The information can also contribute hugely to advice and information if particularly problematic drugs appear.

This presentation was recorded at the National Drugs Conference Wales in Cardiff on 18/19 April 2012.

Free from the chemical controls to which other neighbouring countries are subject and with a burgeoning domestic consumer market of ecstasy-hungry hedonists on its urbanised east-coast, China fosters the perfect base conditions to become a centre for global MDMA production - and it appears as though this process has already started.

The effectiveness of anti-illicit-drug public-service announcements: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The effectiveness of anti-illicit-drug public-service announcements: a systematic review and meta-analysis | Media & Academia (archive) | Scoop.it

The authors searched 10 electronic databases along with major conference abstract databases for articles and abstracts that evaluated the effectiveness of anti-illicit-drug PSAs. The authors evaluated all studies that assessed intention to use illicit drugs and/or levels of illicit-drug use after exposure to PSAs, and conducted meta-analyses of these studies.

>> Emerging Drug Trends UK's insight:

>> Existing evidence suggests that the dissemination of anti-illicit-drug PSAs may have a limited impact on the intention to use illicit drugs or the patterns of illicit-drug use among target populations.
