| Novedades Adiecs! | Scoop.it

Finger pricks and careful eating are an important part of the daily routine for most people with diabetes. While automated glucose meters are a growing option, they can still create discomfort and other inconveniences.

Google wants to go in a totally different direction with a project announced today:smart contact lenses that can detect glucose levels via the wearer’s tears and alert them when levels dip or rise.

This isn’t the first smart contact lens, and several options already exist for people interested in monitoring glaucoma. But Babak Parviz, who also leads the Google Glass team, is a smart contact pioneer and Google which is a secretive division of Google dedicated to difficult, future-looking projects, has a reputation for ably pursuing projects like this.

The lens works via a small wireless chip and glucose sensor embedded between two pieces of soft material. The current prototype puts out a reading once a second. Google is also interested in integrating an LED light, which could light up to alert the wearer of dangerous glucose levels.

The lab is now looking for parters to help bring the lens to market. It would also like to develop an app that would help wearers read and manage the data the lens takes in.

The lens could help people with diabetes monitor their daily health and recognize dangerous situations.

Healthcare moving towards better patient experience: Is digital the answer?

Healthcare moving towards better patient experience: Is digital the answer? | Novedades Adiecs! | Scoop.it

Today in the highly digital world that we have come to live in, the experience has to be extended to the consumer’s devices: namely mobile phones, tablets and personal computers delivered on the backbone of the World Wide Web.

So in this era where consumers have come to expect more from their brands, are patients correct in demanding a better user experience from their care providers?

Healthcare organizations are aware of this expectation and they are also aware that physicians and their allied co-workers need a better medium to communicate and collaborate among them. This not only leads to a better experience for all but also is critical as hospitals continue to drive better clinical outcomes.

One of the aspects of digital engagement is providing an exceptional web experience, whether it is providing physicians with real time data and reports on the cases they are following or engaging patients with education that can help them manage their health better.

The digital experience can help in achieving the following

1)      Provide a platform for better collaboration between physicians. Also this helps in increasing consultations between experts who are not necessarily collocated but still need a visual to make a better diagnosis.

2)      Accentuates the sharing of information between hospitals and even between various departments of the same  hospital.

3)      Leveraging the existing hospital information to give a visual picture to the patients on education and how they can leverage the hospital and its facilities to the best of its ability.

4)      Running extensive 360 degree programs involving various departments like surgery, nutrition and physiotherapy.

5)      Providing a mechanism for better healthcare management.

The roll of Medical imaging in personalized medicine

The roll of Medical imaging in personalized medicine | Novedades Adiecs! | Scoop.it

The future of personalized medicine comprise quantifiable diagnosis and tailored treatments; i.e. delivering the right treatment at the right time. To achieve standardized definition of what “right” means, the designated treatment location and lesion size are important factors.

This is unrelated to whether the treatment is focused to a location or general. The roll of medical imaging is and will continue to be vital in that respect: Patients’ stratification based on imaging biomarkers can help identify individuals suited for preventive intervention and can improve disease staging. In vivo visualization of loco-regional physiological, biochemical and biological processes using molecular imaging can detect diseases in pre-symptomatic phases or facilitate individualized drug delivery.

Furthermore, as mentioned in most of my previous posts, imaging is essential to patient-tailored therapy planning, therapy monitoring, quantification of response-to-treatment and follow-up disease progression. Especially with the rise of companion diagnostics/theranostics (therapeutics & diagnostics), imaging and treatment will have to be synchronized in real-time to achieve the best control/guidance of the treatment.

It is worthwhile noting that the new RECIST 1.1 criteria (used in oncological therapy monitoring) have been expanded to include the use of PET (in addition to lymph-node evaluation).
