Anonymous calls on followers to attack Donald Trump - The Telegraph

Anonymous calls on followers to attack Donald Trump - The Telegraph | The Pointman | Scoop.it
The group, which declared "total war" on Trump ahead of the election last year, called on its supports to look for and reveal any information they can find about the president-elect that could compromise his position.

In a statement directed to Trump on Twitter Anonymous alleged: "You have financial and personal ties with Russian mobsters, child traffickers and money launderers... This isn't the eighties any longer, information doesn't vanish, it is all out there."

It then threatened: "You are going to regret the next four years."
#OpDejaVu's insight:

This isn't a call to attack anybody, let alone the president.  If they want to mine data about Donald Trump, what's the big deal?

The worst that could happen is that we might actually find out what our president paid in taxes.  Many voters are furious because Trump broke his promise to produce his tax records during his campaign, and many voters now feel betrayed.

Maybe the folks at Anonymous feel the same way.

US spies caught Russian officers bragging about causing chaos in the election 6 months before the vote - Business Insider

US spies caught Russian officers bragging about causing chaos in the election 6 months before the vote - Business Insider | The Pointman | Scoop.it
US spies caught a Russian military-intelligence officer bragging about causing chaos in the upcoming US election six months before the vote, according to a new Time magazine cover story by Massimo Calabresi. Although a declassified intelligence report released in January concluded that Russia ordered an influence operation to try to sway the 2016 election, it was in May 2016 that American spies were hearing the first talk of it in Moscow. Citing "senior intelligence officials," Time reports that a Russian military officer with the GRU (its military-intelligence agency) was caught speaking with a colleague, saying that he would cause chaos in the upcoming American election as payback for what Hillary Clinton did to foment protests in Russia during her time as secretary of state.

Hacking Attack Has Security Experts Scrambling to Contain Fallout - The New York Times

Hacking Attack Has Security Experts Scrambling to Contain Fallout - The New York Times | The Pointman | Scoop.it
Governments, companies and security experts from China to Britain raced on Saturday to contain the fallout from an audacious global cyberattack amid fears that if they did not succeed, companies would lose their data unless they met ransom demands. The global efforts came less than a day after malicious software, transmitted via email and stolen from the National Security Agency, targeted vulnerabilities in computer systems in almost 100 countries in one of the largest “ransomware” attacks on record. The cyberattackers took over the computers, encrypted the information on them and then demanded payment of $300 or more from users to unlock the devices. Some of the world’s largest institutions and government agencies were affected, including the Russian Interior Ministry, FedEx in the United States and Britain’s National Health Service.

Lindsey Graham Chastises Republicans Happy About Hacking: 'You're Not A Patriot' - The Huffington Post

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday went after members of his own party who think the Russians did the United States a service by hacking Democratic emails, saying that people who have that attitude are unpatriotic.
#OpDejaVu's insight:
There are many times that I do not agree with Senator Graham. However, on this issue I wholeheartedly agree with him in that it is unpatriotic to cheer on any country that willfully attacks us with the intention of undermining our political system.

Facebook is losing the fight against the spread of fake news - naked security by Sophos | The Pointman | Scoop.it
We already know that since the 2016 US presidential election, Facebook and other social media platforms have been in hot water over fake news. Now, thanks to a report from the Guardian, we also know that in spite of Facebook’s new fact-checking system; its partnering with third-party fact-checkers including Snopes, ABC News, Politifact, FactCheck and the Associated Press; and its new “disputed” tag, which is supposed to be slapped on to dodgy news stories but isn’t always, those fake stories are doing just fine, thank you very much.

After WannaCry, will Google now fix permissions security flaw exploited by most Android ransomware? - V3.co.uk | The Pointman | Scoop.it

Malware targetting Android is exploiting a security hole in order to take control of people's mobile devices - and Google has ruled out patching the security flaw until the next major upgrade of Android.

But after the WannaCry ransomware spread over the weekend, should Google do more to patch Android as a matter of urgency?

#OpDejaVu's insight:

"The galling truth is that even after they patch this Android security flaw, the chances are that many Android users will find the patch is simply unavailable to them, because of the knotted mess that is Android's updating infrastructure," - Graham Cluley

Yahoo’s top lawyer, Ronald S. Bell, resigned Wednesday, and its chief executive, Marissa Mayer, lost her 2016 bonus after a board investigation of the 2014 theft of information on more than 500 million user accounts.Senior executives, company lawyers and information security staff were aware of the hack in 2014 and also knew about subsequent attempts to break into the affected accounts in 2015 and 2016, but failed to “properly comprehend or investigate” the situation, the company’s board of directors said in a securities filing on Wednesday.
