The Science of Sleep: Dreaming, Depression, and How REM Sleep Regulates Negative Emotions

The Science of Sleep: Dreaming, Depression, and How REM Sleep Regulates Negative Emotions | Notes From a Dreamer | Scoop.it
"Memory is never a precise duplicate of the original...it is a continuing act of creation. Dream images are the product of that creation."
bobbie_pimm@bobbieann.net's insight:
This explains a lot to me, personally.

Caleigh Pryor's curator insight, March 22, 12:41 PM
  • People who are clinically depressed often experience REM sleep sooner and longer as opposed to people are not. This is causing the body to not release the Human Growth Horomone which causes the bodys healing process to slow down and stunts growth.
  • Often times, dreams tend to focus on negative things that have happened to us. We often dwell on the negative and when we sleep, our subconcious takes those thoughts, pieces them together with past experiences and emotions and that piecing together is what we experience as dreams.
  • While in REM sleep, people whom are not depressed, show high activity in the parts of the brain where emotion is carried out. Those whom are depressed, show little to no activity
  • There is not a bias in this article. The author shows both sides of dreaming when it comes to those who are and are not depressed.
  • The puropse of this article is to inform people about dreaming and what the effects mental illness can have on your dreams and how well you are sleeping.
  • I think dreams are really interesting and I love how our minds work. I have saud fir years and years that I would love to figure out why things are the way they are and what makes us tick. I think that is why I find psychology and dreaming so fascinating because it's such a far out concept and there really is no way to fully understand everything our mind does and what our subconscious sees. Dreams are meant to take in new data and to sort out what we want and should remember. I think that all of it is amazing and I would love to one day be able to study dreams and what they really mean.

This scientist can hack your dreams

This scientist can hack your dreams | Notes From a Dreamer | Scoop.it
What if we could peek inside our brains and see our dreams -- or even shape them? Studying memory-specific brain cells, neuroscientist (and ex-hacker) Moran Cerf found that our sleeping brains retain some of the content we encounter when we're awake and that our dreams can influence our waking actions. Where could this lead us? "Neuroscientists are now giving us a new tool to control our dreams," Cerf says, "a new canvas that flickers to life when we fall asleep."

Lucid dreams turn sleep into a 'fascinating and enjoyable experience'

Lucid dreams turn sleep into a 'fascinating and enjoyable experience' | Notes From a Dreamer | Scoop.it
Lucid dreaming, or realizing you are dreaming while dreaming, can increase mindfulness and reduce nightmares. It can also be loads of fun.
Caleigh Pryor's curator insight, March 23, 6:56 PM
  • Lucid dreaming is classified as being aware that you are dreaming while actually being in the dream. You tell yourself that you're in the dream and aware of what is going on around you is not real.
  • Lucid dreaming can help people deal with PTSD, nightmares, depression and all around your well being.
  • To help induce lucid dreaming, you can focus on a problem that you're struggling with before bed because that greatly increases the likelyhood that you'll dream about it.
  • Bias: There really isn't a bias in this. It address how it could be frightening for some poeple to realize that they're aware that they're dreaming and also how much it can help someone.
  • The purpose of this article to is inform and to persuade people about lucid dreaming. It informs you what the topic is and it tries to persuade you into trying to lucid dream.
  • I find lucid dreaming really interesting and I, myself have had many lucid dreams. They really are an amazing experience to be totally aware that you're dreaming and that what is going on around you isn't real. I was stuck in a nightmare a few weeks ago and while in it, it clicked in my brain that what was going on around me wasn't real and I was able to pull myself out of it. It is an empowering experience to know that you can essestionally control what you dream about.
