"Expression of Interest" - Canada's proposed immigrant application system | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it
Updated: On December 10, 2013, hireimmigrants.ca hosted a webinar on the proposed Expression of Interest model. Questions #1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10 in this article have been updated to reflect new information from this webinar.
Heather MacDonald's insight:

As details unfold we'll understand more.  Speeding up the application process is laudable, but how the government communicates selection decisions at this early stage of the process to our applicants will be important.  No one simply wants to be "purged" without understanding why.  I look forward to hearing more and will follow for you and re-post.

Why Monk Mode Is The Secret To Insane Productivity

Why Monk Mode Is The Secret To Insane Productivity | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it
If you have a gigantic project and a ton of people wanting your time how do you satisfy both? By slipping into monk mode.
Heather MacDonald's insight:

I've always found this to be invaluable, and when coaching others referred to it as "going to the mountain".  It meant isolating yourself from others which supports your ability to think clearly, seeing the big picture, and ultimately solutions where required - or innovations - they are the best!

This can be done in many ways, and in fact does not have to directed - some of my best ah ha moments come during a long work out.  And without a doubt for me, I am at my best if I do my big early morning workouts without fail. ;-)

25 Teaching Tools To Organize, Innovate, & Manage Your Classroom

25 Teaching Tools To Organize, Innovate, & Manage Your Classroom | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it

"Over the years, many of us have personally experienced the growth of technology in today’s classrooms. Instead of taking notes, students are now occupied by surfing the Internet, scrolling through Facebook, and messaging their friends on their smart phones, tablets, and laptops. Instead of focusing on the instruction, teachers are constantly required to interrupt class in order to remind those students again and again, that class time is for learning, not texting. However, as today’s students are using more technological devices, it is imperative that teachers have access to the resources to keep pace with the growing tech culture."

Variable Mortgages Safe Again - How Can You Take Advantage?

Variable Mortgages Safe Again - How Can You Take Advantage? | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it

The Bank of Canada held rates again, making the mortgage market more appealing to consumers while others get nervous about subsquent tighting of mortgage rules that could follow eventually.  I'm looking at it from another angle....

Heather MacDonald's insight:

For my readers, who like to stay on top of mortgage rate fluctuations, this is just a quick update.  For my other readers...long past having a mortgage, but looking at downsizing, I might suggest don't blow off the idea of more creative financing the next move.

Often my clients will cite the "lateral move" reality of prices in their community.  They see to go to a smaller but more contemporary property, the price tag is not much different than sale of the current home.  Most people want to think they can bank some investment elsewhere when they "downsize".  But in a city this seems unlikely.

However, with interest rates (particularly variable rates) as they are maybe one can have both for a while without sticking it to the positive cash flow we also covet.

I think it's the accountant/finance person inside me that says "hey - let's crunch some numbers and see what it looks like!"

Smithsonian Finds E-readers Makes Reading Easier for Those with Dyslexia

Smithsonian Finds E-readers Makes Reading Easier for Those with Dyslexia | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it

"As e-readers grow in popularity as convenient alternatives to traditional books, researchers at the Smithsonian have found that convenience may not be their only benefit. The team discovered that when e-readers are set up to display only a few words per line, some people with dyslexia can read more easily, quickly and with greater comprehension."

Via Beth Dichter
Heather MacDonald's insight:

I love these kinds of advances.  For those of us who know of people who've struggled with language learning challenges this is a great discovery. Language leaning problems create way too many other personal and social problems for children who then grow to be adults with problems unless they are diagnosed and helped.

Way to go Smithsonian researchers!

"...hear me before you see me". Awarding winning leader seeks role in Ward 6 | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it
Blog: My Back Pages by John Stewart
Heather MacDonald's insight:

Rabia Khedr who has inspired so many with her intellect, humour, and leadership capabilities has set her sights on a new challenge.

This is an inspiring story in itself of municipal change in leadership for Mississauga.  As a grass roots candidate she challenges conventional wisdom on novice campaigners.  But I think she is well schooled in challenging and tweaking conventional wisdom.

One of her most significant statements in this article that illuminates such a remarkable person is a comment on herself...

"All those identity markers make me a whole person". "I want you to hear me before you see me".  And as she comments in this article, diverse experiences and identity markers add value to discourse.

To me she is a very impressive candidate.

Protect Your Elder Friends and Neighbours

Great awareness video; please share.  Did you know that scam victims can become addicted to criminal outreach?  I'm compelled to share the word.  I'm currently doing what I can to help a person I've met in my business travels who stands to be on the street very soon.  A victim of lottery scams and apparently the whole laundry list of others, it appears he is also addicted to this behaviour.  It will be his demise.

All I can do is present him with a resource list including the Anti-fraud Center, report what I know to that agency and the Elder Abuse Line, and start writing and sharing more articles on elder support awareness.

Jokes - Phrasing is Important

Jokes - Phrasing is Important | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it
In writing, we often mark phrasing with punctuation. In speech, we mark phrasing with intonation and pausing. If it is not done correctly, you might be misunderstood! Take a look at the following examples: WHAT IS IT?
Heather MacDonald's insight:

This is so true for all of us!  Even more so if we are new to a country or culture.  I laugh because I remember a colleague's story:  while being entertained by Japanese businessmen at a highly liquored dinner, he stood up and announced "I kill cats".

The ladies present started to giggle quietly with heads down once they realized the humour of his error.  He was trying to express thanks to the hosts.

Heather MacDonald's insight:

Where do I start?  Maybe with the fact Mr. Van Dyne is principle of a software company called iGOfsbo.

While the way of viewing "product" has evolved the real value proposition of strategy, pricing, context, and contract knowledge, remains.  Arguing transparency, efficiency, and cost savings is not supportable.

If a Realtor only provided (and a customer only expected) a find and show service plus the "human touch" then we've made some progress using internet advertising.  But then non-experts don't know what they don't know and that includes really finding all suitable properties and vetting the falsley-advertised along the way.

There has always been advertising - it's just moved to the internet and away from Saturday newspaper.  Successful sale of property (or purchase) has way more moving parts than the advertising component.

The Coming C-Change in Customer Behavior

The Coming C-Change in Customer Behavior | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it
When was the last time you researched customer segmentation for your business? When was the last time you reviewed your customer’s decision journey?
Heather MacDonald's insight:

Constant awareness and action to find and respond to constantly evolving consumer touch points is critical.  This article although lengthy puts this back on the front burner, and gives good examples that make the point.

Near the end they talk about a need to be customer centric and innovative to introduce new business models.  My businesses have always been this kind of culture, and interestingly have found I'm challenged the most by the "prospective customer" response to my innovations in real estate practice.

The frame of reference for customers of real estate transactions is so strong, that innovations for their benefit (at least in the service model) are not easily grasped.  They truly seem to need to experience it first hand before it's understood.

So my lesson learned is one can not force the speed of adoption but it is organic.

TEDxMilton Speakers Inspire and Shine a Light | Notable News and Insights | Scoop.it

Golnaz Goinaraghi - Tyler Masereeuw - Carolyn Thompson - Ian Morrison - Tamara Lopez - Dr. Ginger Grant spoke at #TEDxMilton 2013

Heather MacDonald's insight:

Light on the path. Six intriguing stories brought to life on stage in #TEDxMilton yesterday.  It was my privilage to experience a few moments of the lives of these people, who've reflected, realized, and can talk about the importance of their own story.

In sharing stories about personal "linchpins" we share light for others in the "core" of their own path and unable to see the connections.  Or we inspire those who have felt the effects, but could not see, of not yet connecting with their own path.

One quote brought forward what summed up a common theme was "you become what think about most of the time".  And the other personal message was that only "self imposed limits" hold people back.

My personal favorite on a business theme, was Dr. Ginger Grant's time on stage for I too am a student of innovation and a designer of customer experience.

Congratuations to all the organizers - the TEDxMilton team - who pulled together a great event held at the Milton Centre for the Arts which is a fabulous new building in the up and coming bustle of "new Milton".
