Brad Ovenell-Carter's curator insight, July 6, 2013 12:48 PM

This is what personalization of learning is about, and it's what personalization of teaching is about: let people use the tools that allow them to work at their best. I understand IT departments used to need need to standardize, but those days are rapidly disappearing. We're finally getting to a place where instead of having to adapt ourselves to the institution, we can have the institution adapt to us.

Amy Burvall's comment, July 6, 2013 2:33 PM
Excellent point, Brad. I've always thought I was "going rogue" when I bypassed the IT dept and took charge of my own tools...now I think I was just "going vogue"
Dolly Bhasin 's curator insight, July 13, 2013 11:55 PM

Skype is becoming to heavy and resource demanding, so would eventually loose out.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, July 7, 2013 5:10 AM

"Today learning happens everywhere and the skills learned outside of the formal curriculum are just as important to employers as qualifications. Badge the UK is a new project which will enable learners to demonstrate all their achievements using digital badges.

Funded by Nominet Trust, over the next two years we will be helping teachers, employers and social enterprises to badge their learning programmes and provide an easy way for any teacher to award the badges they create nationwide."

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, July 9, 2013 5:40 AM

"In the past few years, emerging technologies (such as mobile devices or social networks) have rapidly spread into all areas of our life. However, while employees in SMEs increasingly use these technologies for private purposes and to a lesser extent for information seeking and informal learning, enterprises have not generally recognized the potential of such technologies for supporting learning.

As a consequence, the use of these emerging technologies and support for Personal Learning Environments have not been systematically taken up as a sustainable learning strategy that is integrated with other forms of learning at the workplace."

Would like to hear the audio to this presentation. Don't feel that universities are on their way out, but they will be forced to change.
Mark Smithers's comment, September 19, 2013 9:19 PM
Hi Benjamin, I agree. They aren't on their way out but they will need to change. The question is what what is a university for? If it's for doing what it does right now (which I don;t believe) then they won't exist. Ah semantics :)

In 2011, as the University of California, Davis added a new major in sustainable agriculture and food systems, it sought to create a curriculum that would help students develop competencies for addressing the environmental, social, and economic challenges involving agriculture.

Thierry Belleguic's curator insight, June 30, 2013 7:48 AM

In 2011, as the University of California, Davis added a new major in sustainable agriculture and food systems, it sought to create a curriculum that would help students develop competencies for addressing the environmental, social, and economic challenges involving agriculture.

Because much of the work takes place outside the classroom, administrators wanted students to create their own portfolios where they could demonstrate all types of learning and activities. "This seemed to match well with digital badges," says Joanna Normoyle, internship coordinator and undergraduate adviser for UC-Davis' Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI). "We want to help students organize their thinking about their different learning experiences and tell their story. It seemed to us that badges could help take something that is highly abstract and concretize it."

The new major was selected as one of 30 winners of a MacArthur Foundation Digital Media & Learning Competition grant. That funding is supporting development of a digital portfolio that helps students build badges they can display on LinkedIn, Facebook, and to future employers. ASI initially worked with some third-party software developers but is now transitioning the badge system in-house. After 18 months of development work, the system is set to launch this fall.

This is controversial in some circles, but basically on trend. To sum: Learning professionals are irrelevant dinosaurs who are being deservedly cast aside by information technology that enables people to learn everything better on their own. It has nothing to do of course, with workplace austerity.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, July 9, 2013 8:10 AM

#Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are a recent addition to the range of online learning options. Since 2008, MOOCs have been run by a variety of public and elite universities, especially in North America. Many academics have taken interest in MOOCs recognising the potential to deliver education around the globe on an unprecedented scale; some of these academics are taking a research-oriented perspective and academic papers describing their research are starting to appear in the traditional media of peer reviewed publications. This paper presents a systematic review of the published MOOC literature (2008-2012): Forty-five peer reviewed papers are identified through journals, database searches, searching the Web, and chaining from known sources to form the base for this review. We believe this is the first effort to systematically review literature relating to MOOCs, a fairly recent but massively popular phenomenon with a global reach. The review categorises the literature into eight different areas of interest, introductory, concept, case studies, educational theory, technology, participant focussed, provider focussed, and other, while also providing quantitative analysis of publications according to publication type, year of publication, and contributors. Future research directions guided by gaps in the literature are explored."
