Hotel & Spa Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, Spain

Hotel & Spa Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, Spain | Travel Northern Spain | Scoop.it
After a remodelling period of ten years, a former monastery from the 12th century has been converted into a five-star hotel and spa – situated in the heart of the famous wine region Ribera del Duero in Spain. The lighting concept is based on a comprehensive family of custom-designed luminaires, made of massive bronze, produced by traditional bronze blacksmiths. It accompanies the unique character of the listed building, emanating warmth and durability. Where monks used to pray in silence, the illumination sensitively underlines the atmospheric setting, using LED technology, thus providing the guests with a place of calm, well-being and relaxation. Exterior The monastery’s façade is gently
and homogenously illuminated by buried uplights. Soft light emerges from the building apertures and extends an inviting gesture.

Terras Gauda – Champions of Albariño

Terras Gauda – Champions of Albariño | Travel Northern Spain | Scoop.it
Formed relatively recently, in 1989, this premium boutique winery group also encompasses Pittacum in D.O. Bierzo and Quinta Sardonia (founded by famed Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck), just outside of Ribeira del Duero. At their founding facility in the O Rosal valley, they take the science of growing and making wine very seriously and are recognised as a leader in the study of the heirloom varieties of their region, Rías Baixas. In addition to albariño, varieties include the rare caiño blanco, an indigenous grape that all but disappeared in the 1980s, until Terras Gauda rediscovered its high quality and launched an ambitious replanting program in 1989.

Saying Good Bye to my Indiana Legs and the Basque Country

I see the mountains surrounding Agurain (the city I teach in) every day.  I wonder if my commute will ever be as amazing as it is now. Some people ask me if I prefer the south or the north of Spain. In terms of landscape, I have to say the north is the most beautiful with its green rolling hills and mountains.

In caves across Europe, mysterious geometric signs dating back to the Ice Age can be found alongside more recognizable renderings of animals and handprints. Genevieve von Petzinger became obsessed with those largely ignored shapes, and is leading an effort to learn more about them.

Over the course of two years, she worked at 52 rock-art sites across France, Spain, Portugal, and Sicily, documenting what she saw. She identified 32 main signs that appear across the caves, creating for the first time a relational database that catalogs them all.

Bagpipes, Inlets & Forests. Scotland? No, Green Spain.

Bagpipes, Inlets & Forests. Scotland? No, Green Spain. | Travel Northern Spain | Scoop.it

I came to Green Spain  just ‘for a look’ – I really knew very little about the region. To be honest I accepted the invitation not with glee or pent-up excitement but more-so a nonchalant air of – ‘sure, why not’. Looking back now I believe that it was exactly this lack of expectation or any preconceived notions about the region that enabled this small pocket of Spain to capture me as it did. I was immediately beguiled by its veritable smorgasbord of attractions – it was an alluring tapas of scenery, gastronomy, culture and ancient traditions.

Charles S GL's insight:
Green Spain is full of surprises.  The best way to discover them if you have the luzury of time is by wandering.  Don´t have that luzury? Have a local expert show you:
