Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) | SSWM

Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) | SSWM | North South Tribune | Scoop.it

Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is an approach which helps rural communities to understand and realise the negative effects of poor sanitation and empowers them to collectively find solutions to their inadequate sanitation situation. CLTS is focused on igniting a change in sanitation behaviour rather than constructing toilets. This is done by a process of social awakening that is stimulated by facilitators from within or outside the community.[...]

Arttu Vanninen's insight:

This looks like an important approach.

SC Johnson Delivering Sustainable Sanitation in Kenya: a Case Study

"This case study outlines SC Johnson’s learning journey of how, leveraging resources and expertise from within the company, local entrepreneurs, and social sector partners, CCS has developed an innovative ready-to-use solution to the software challenges (ongoing management and maintenance of toilets), as opposed to the toilet hardware or infrastructure construction challenges, of urban sanitation."

State of Water and Sanitation in Africa 2012: Report

State of Water and Sanitation in Africa 2012: Report | North South Tribune | Scoop.it

"Political stability has heavily influenced progress in improving access to WSS service with low-income stable countries outperforming low-income fragile and resource-rich countries.

The shift in how aid is delivered, from donor-driven projects to country-led programmatic approaches, has strengthened the service delivery pathways that translate inputs (finance) into outcomes (coverage) anchored in core government systems—greatly extending their reach and rate of implementation capacity."

Arttu Vanninen's insight:

The reports seem to include lots of to-do lists. However, they do give a good overall image of the development of water and sanitation issues in many African countries.

Country reports can be found on many countries, including Ghana and South Africa.

The World Bank Institute: Focus on Public-Private Parnerships

"Public-private partnerships (PPPs) where the private sector provides services on behalf of the government can provide solutions to [the] basic services deficit. PPPs can mobilize additional sources of funding and financing for infrastructure—important at a time of financial austerity, help improve project selection by subjecting them to the market test of attracting private finance, and ensure planning for the adequate maintenance of assets."

Development companies to support sanitation business?

Arttu Vanninen's insight:

What could be the most effective way to turn sanitation into business? In Finland, regional development companies have been established to many municipalities to help develop those areas and SMEs (Small and Medium Size Enterprises) in them. The development companies are flexible compared to municipal administration, and there is clarity between ownership, management and operative functions. I think this is a model worth considering in the South too.

This site includes many kinds of how to -guides, from tippy taps to latrines and kilns. Unfortunately some of the links don't work anymore, but there are still many that do.

Arbor Loo Composting Toilet for Haiti

Arbor Loo Composting Toilet for Haiti | North South Tribune | Scoop.it

Moveable composting toilets that allow fruit or wood-bearing tree saplings to be planted have been used for many years in Africa and now Haiti (see: S.O.I.L.) to encourage planting of orchards by families. This design was for a villiage in Haiti's Central Plateau and is based on those ideas. Four units were constructed using materials available in nearby Hinche at a cost of about $135 U.S. which includes the estimate for labor for 1 day (2 men), construction, transport and installation.

"The success of the ArborLoo latrine in Ethiopia means that the concept is increasingly adopted in West and Southern Africa, and is now being replicated in other CRS country programmes. CRS has helped to build 500 in South Sudan and a few in Uganda and Kenyan East Africa."
