China Could Become the World’s Largest Christian Country

China Could Become the World’s Largest Christian Country | Asia, north and South America | Scoop.it
China likely already has more Protestants—an estimated 58 million—than South Africa or Brazil, major centers of evangelical revival,  and 67 million Christians in all—larger than the total population of France. More people go to church on Sunday in China than in all of Europe.  But Tom Philips of the Telegraph...
OliviaandVenessa's insight:

Religion:
Venessa and I have selected this article because China is expected to become the world's largest Christian country. Currently there are an estimated 25 million Christians in China, but that number is predicted to rise quickly with such a large and densely compacted population of people.
EQ: How could the uprising of Christianity affect other's (non-Christians) daily lives?

Brazil is on the brink of a coffee shortage

Brazil is on the brink of a coffee shortage | Asia, north and South America | Scoop.it
Not only will coffee be more expensive, it may also taste worse.
OliviaandVenessa's insight:

Due to the worst drought in decades, Brazil is on the brink of a coffee shortage. The crop may fall below 50 million bags, a substantial loss when compared to its potential yield of 58 million. "As a result, the cost of Arabica coffee beans — the variety beloved by Starbucks— is skyrocketing." And not only will coffee prices rise about 50%, it will start tasting worse too due to using cheaper beans to save money.

EQ: if you drink coffee, will you be doing anything different with your coffee drinking habits? What can you do or what will you do to try and help the situation?

World Cup 2014: the boos from Brazil - Telegraph

World Cup 2014: the boos from Brazil - Telegraph | Asia, north and South America | Scoop.it
The football showpiece promises the best of the beautiful game – but building work is behind schedule and protests are growing at the amount of public money spent
OliviaandVenessa's insight:

SOCIAL:

Venessa and I have selected this article because the scenarios described within it clearly relate to the social category on the scoop.it notes. Brazil is soon to be the host of the 2014 World Cup. However, to host this relatively formal event, the government has been trying to clean up their image. And to do so, it is costing a lot of money from a country who's economy is in a currently stalled position. Because of this, preparations for the Cup have been pushed far behind where they should've been.  This is all causing chaos, therefore creating turmoil on the streets.   Rallies have broken out on the streets  since the rise in bus fares due to the government needing even MORE money to clean up after the protests. It's very much like a vicious cycle.

EQ: what would you do to help settle the economic and social conflict in Brazil?

Social Class in Canada

OliviaandVenessa's insight:

Vanessa and I have chosen this article because it shows all aspects of how social classes work in Canada. It gives examples of how women are often paid much less than men, which is also common theme throughout the world's countries. And it also shows that children are at the greatest risk of poverty due to lack of education.

What are your thoughts, based on previous experiences,  of why females are typically paid much less than men in the work force? Use real life examples to support your answer.

OliviaandVenessa's insight:

Politcal:
We chose this article due for the political category of PERSIA. A spokesman for North Korea's military attacked the US for what it said was "a blindly backed confrontational conspiracy" devised by the government of South Korean President Park Geun-hye, whom it called a “political prostitute”. Due to the foul-mouthed spokesman, tension has risen between the US and N. Korea. In April, North Korea described President Barack Obama  in an article this month a “wicked black monkey”.

EQ: If North Korea keeps attacking Obama like they are doing right now, what do you think will happen? Just more political banter? Or the possibility of a war or other confrontation? Based on what you already know about the US' relationship with North Korea, explain what you think the outcome will be.

Politics, China's policy hurt AOT'S profit The Nation Airports of Thailand's net profit in the second quarter dropped by 18.05 per cent year on year to Bt3.694 billion.
OliviaandVenessa's insight:

Economic:
Venessa and I chose this article for the Economic category because the enforcement of a Chinese tourism law (article never specified what this law is all about) since October 2013 has made a significant impact on the airports of Thailand's profits. The number of foreign tourists to Thailand is expected to reach 26.19 million this year, down 1 per cent when compared to 26.7 million last year, as a result of this new law.

EQ: How will this loss of profit effect Thailand's economy?
