Why Corporate Social Responsibility is Important in 2014

We recently posted a blog on defining corporate social responsibility and thought it would be beneficial to elaborate on why it is so important for both corporations and nonprofit organizations, especially as strategic plans are created for 2014. Corporate Social Responsibility Corporations As mentioned in our earlier blog about corporate social responsibility, current times don t allow for companies to simply be in business for the sake of making a profit. Consumers rely on corporations on a regular basis, but given the level of competition for goods and services, customers are able to make decisions based on how much good a corporation is also doing outside of the workplace hence, how they are positively impacting their community. Public Image A corporation s public image is at the mercy of it s social responsibility programs. According to a study by Cone Communications, 9 out of 10 consumers would refrain from doing business with a corporation if there existed no corporate social

What is Corporate Social Responsibility?

Gone are the days in which corporations exist solely to make a profit. While that is still quite a top priority, businesses are now focusing a lot on corporate social responsibility, which is also the way a company deals with its environmental and social impacts. Corporate social responsibility has become, according to a recent study by Cone Communications, an expected part of a corporation s mission. Corporations that disregard this consumer-demanded role risk more than their reputation nine-in-10 global citizens say they would boycott if they learned of irresponsible behaviors. (Cone Communications) Corporate social responsibility programs help benefit society and help a corporation s public perception. There are various examples of CSR programs, including Buy One Give One, environmental green support, and charitable giving programs such as matching gift and volunteer grant programs. Companies that Match Gifts to Elementary Schools

At Double the Donation, we frequently receive questions about which companies match gifts to specific nonprofit categories. We previously covered matching gifts at high schools and higher education institutions, but elementary schools and foundations are also major recipients. It s well known that almost all companies with matching gifts will match to higher education, but the policies can be confusing in regards to K-12 schools. In this article we highlight a few companies that make a major impact on elementary school education by matching donations from employees. Corporate Matching Gifts for Elementary Schools Elementary schools have a lot to gain from corporate matching. HP, for instance, allows employees to support organizations with HP technology. The HP employee contributes 25% of the equipment s list price and the remaining 75% is matched by the company. Thus a $1,000 donation from a parent would be worth $4,000 in equipment. What can Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Mean for your Nonprofit?

Double the Donation s blog is normally dedicated to covering corporate giving yet we know our readers and customers are interested in peer-to-peer fundraising, a hot topic at the moment. So we reached out to Jessica Aceto at FirstGiving to share a few thoughts on how peer-to-peer fundraising can be beneficial for your nonprofit.  (Image credit: Flickr: 1000heads) Guest post by Jessica Aceto, FirstGiving You may have heard of peer-to-peer fundraising around the nonprofit block, but it could mean more for your organization than you realize. Peer-to-peer fundraising allows nonprofits to gain the support of not just donors, but fundraisers who will reach out to their individual networks on the nonprofit’s behalf. It automatically extends an already vast network by cultivating relationships with fundraisers and their family and friends that a nonprofit may not be able to reach. So how can peer-to-peer help you raise more money in the long-term for your mission and cause? Peer-to-peer fu

Defining Corporate Philanthropy

Philanthropy (n.) – “Goodwill to fellow members of the human race; especially an active effort to promote human welfare.” (Merriam-Webster) Written above is the standard definition of philanthropy; essentially an act of charity. So what is the difference between an act of philanthropy when done by an individual versus a corporation? In short, there is no difference. Corporate Philanthropy is the act of a corporation or business promoting the welfare of others, generally via charitable donations of funds or time. With corporations donating more than $15 billion per year to nonprofit organizations and charities, corporate philanthropy has become a hot button topic, and a source of income that charities shouldn t overlook. To Get Corporate Support, Start with its Employees

Double the Donation s blog is dedicated to covering matching gift and volunteer grant programs, yet our readers and customers often ask how to receive larger donations from corporations. So we reached out to Richard Freedlund at Greater Good Fundraising to share a few thoughts on how nonprofits can take a bottoms-up approach to receiving corporate support.  Article by Richard Freedlund at Greater Good Fundraising Nonprofit organizations need diverse sources of support to sustain and grow their programs.  To be successful, they have to build networks of donors who will help them.  If they engage their supporters, those supporters can engage others, who in turn, will support them too. Engaging Businesses Many organizations have learned that for greater support, they must engage businesses as well.  They believe that corporations can afford to give bigger gifts, so they engage them for sponsorships of events and ask for grants and other forms of support.  The problem for those organ

General Electric – Paving the Way for Matching Gifts!

In this post, Double the Donation wants to pay homage to the very first corporate gift-matching program to exist – General Electric. General Electric (often called “GE”) is a multinational corporation that operates in four areas, most notably in energy and technology infrastructure. In 1954, more than 50 years after its founding, General Electric created the Corporate Alumni Program to support its employees in their personal philanthropy and charitable giving. Since then, it has become a model for countless other employee matching gift programs. GE & Corporate Philanthropy Obvious success of the model is proven by the millions of dollars matched annually by General Electric, including nearly $38 million matched in 2012 alone! That’s $72 million donated to more than 10,000 nonprofit organizations – now that’s what we call corporate philanthropy! Those eligible to participate in GE’s matching gift program range from full-time employees to part-time employees to retirees. G
