Storytelling + Design Thinking

Storytelling + Design Thinking | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it

"A design thinking approach to story —

Design Thinking is about taking a disciplined, objective and methodical approach to solving a design problem: clearly defining the challenge, creating multiple solutions, picking the best and executing.

Combining this with story creates a process where we inject this same discipline into the narrative process, effectively removing the guesswork. In this case, the design problem is identifying and delivering the meaning of your story in the mind of your audience in the most memorable way."

People do business with people, not with technology. Whether you are a person or a brand, to truly build long-lasting personal relationship with another person or a brand advocate you need way more than just a couple of tweets and a LinkedIn connection request, you need face-to-face time.

How the internet of things could make media physical again

How the internet of things could make media physical again | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it
Not so long ago, every act of consumption began with a ritual. We pulled records from sleeves and perched them on turntables, slid books from shelves, watched as VHS tapes were ingested with a soft ca-chunk. Qleek, from Paris-based startup Ozenge, aims to return our digital media to a state in which they can be collected, stored,...

What a great piece this is! Written by Keith Nerdin, it tackles whether all the buzz about storytelling and branding really makes sense. Nerdin takes a very common sense approach to this question and his conclusions are spot on.

What I also appreciate is that Nerdin approaches this question from a beginner's mind. He admits he is new to the biz storytelling world. As a result, his discussion and insights are very refreshing.

Too often those new to the field simply parrot what has already been said. Not Nerdin. He's put a lot of thought into the topic of story branding and is not afraid to share these with us.

This is a well written post that I think you will enjoy. And learn from. I won't spoil the ending for you but will tell you his words cut through all the hype out there.

History Made Magic: The Scrapbooks of Harry Houdini Come Alive as Digital Flip Book | Not Even Past

History Made Magic: The Scrapbooks of Harry Houdini Come Alive as Digital Flip Book | Not Even Past | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it

"In a new age of digital powered skepticism, where anything “extraordinary” can be explained within seconds on a smartphone, there isn’t much room for magic.  But the Harry Ransom Center at UTAustin has brought us back to a time when the mystical unknown captured the hearts and minds of people everywhere.  The HRC acquired the scrapbooks of legendary magician Harry Houdini (1891-1926) in 1958 and has recently digitized its collection for the public.  The collection contains ten scrapbooks filled with advertisements, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, reports, how-to articles, and almost everything else regarding magic from roughly the 1830s through the 1920s.  Houdini owned all the books at the time of his death, but he did not compile all of the clippings.  Four books were owned by his contemporaries, including Harry Helms, Herr Jansen, S.S. Baldwin, and Professeur Em. De Verli (sic) and their books have clippings that span Europe and North America throughout the 19th century.  Some scraps detail the “Revival of the Dread Devil-Worship,” while others document articles, such as “Houdini Tells How the Mediums Know So Much...”
