Storytelling + Design Thinking

Storytelling + Design Thinking | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it

"A design thinking approach to story —

Design Thinking is about taking a disciplined, objective and methodical approach to solving a design problem: clearly defining the challenge, creating multiple solutions, picking the best and executing.

Combining this with story creates a process where we inject this same discipline into the narrative process, effectively removing the guesswork. In this case, the design problem is identifying and delivering the meaning of your story in the mind of your audience in the most memorable way."

Building Capacity Through Networks (SSIR)

Building Capacity Through Networks (SSIR) | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it
The longevity of a peer-learning experience is a characteristic of successful networked capacity building. Trusted and lasting relationships help individuals initiate dialogue and encourage knowledge exchange over a longer period of time. The one-time workshops nonprofit capacity builders relied on in the past don’t make the same deep impression on program participants as longer-term, peer-learning cohorts, which prompt participants to dig deeply into their personal learning journeys and connect more easily with fellow participants as a result of trust built up over time. Without that trust, individuals who meet only once are simply less likely to share valuable lessons about what didn’t work with each other. Also, while traditional capacity building workshops may be filled with bright minds and rich experiences, those assets often remain untapped. As noted in the growing literature about collective impact, if those same individuals were participating in a network, their common agenda and mutual dependence would more likely prompt them to share their knowledge and experiences with each other.

Archives offer ways of telling stories that potentially differentiate and give a competitive advantage to legacy journalism organizations. As journalists intensify their efforts to contextualize and explain rather than just report, archives offer low hanging fruit.

Barbara Ganley's insight:

"I think a lot of folks who want to be change agents want to hit grand-slam home runs. Instead, I’m a big proponent of hitting lots of singles, doubles, perhaps some triples, and getting people engaged.

It can be helpful to think about the restoration of the Le Brun painting that we featured in blog posts. We didn’t have our interns write the posts. They were done by two of our most senior staff — Keith Christiansen, head of European Paintings, and Michael Gallagher, head of Painting Conservation. And frankly, curators, conservators — we have 100 scientists at the museum — they are not thinking like a lot of us do, in quarters, months, years. They’re thinking decades and centuries. And they know that this vase will be here for the next 500 years, 1,000 years. And whatever new technology you’re talking about, that’s going to come and go. So how we increase our scholarship and access to it without dumbing it down is absolutely the bottom line."

Like a favorite childhood toy, a military medal, or a memento? Something that lives on your wall, your mantle, or buried in a corner of your dresser? Something that evokes a time or person in your life, a place you miss, or something you hope for?"
