NGOs need to tell better stories

NGOs need to tell better stories | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it
Pressure to turn stories into likes, page views and dollars means NGOs aren’t doing a good enough job of explaining the complexities of development and poverty, says Rachel Kurzyp. It's time to sta...
Natasha Pinczuk's insight:

I give a hearty AMEN to this piece! It really cuts to the core of nonprofit storytelling. Why do we share stories? Is it to gain "likes," to get dollars flowing in, or to encourage questioning and change? Has social media storytelling forced us to dilute important issues for the sake of brevity? Are we preserving the dignity of the people we're writing about? Are we preserving the sacredness of their stories? Excellent questions to wrestle with!

Content Curation Primer

Content Curation Primer | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it

A helpful article on the uses and benefits of content curation for nonprofits. Content curation can be helpful for charities to share relevant information externally with their community or internally within their organization (the concept is similar to the practice of maintaining a "story bank," except the resources collected are external, not internal.) Thanks for the primer, Beth!

People Aren’t Following You Because You Aren’t Being Clear

People Aren’t Following You Because You Aren’t Being Clear | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it
I learned a valuable lesson about leadership from a poet. Recently I attended a poetry reading from America's former poet laureate, Billy Collins. Billy
Natasha Pinczuk's insight:

Are you being clear? Writing demands a certain kind of leadership. You are leading the reader into a story or into a new way of thinking. Miller thoughtfully advises writers and leaders to be clear.

Chimamanda Adichie: The danger of a single story | Video on TED.com

“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.
Natasha Pinczuk's insight:

A powerful TED talk from one of Nigeria's critically acclaimed young authors. Chimamanda's talk made me wonder about the kinds of stories that we tell as nonprofits--are we communicating only one story to our donors? Are we feeding stereotypes? What can we do to tell better, more truthful stories?

Telling the story with integrity | Tim Høiland

Telling the story with integrity | Tim Høiland | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it
If an organization doesn’t do storytelling well, it hasn’t earned the right to be trusted – not by you, and not by the people it purports to serve.
Natasha Pinczuk's insight:

Nonprofits are not just called to steward their resources carefully--they must also be good stewards of their WORDS. "...storytelling with integrity and excellence really matters." When you tell a story well, your donors can begin to trust you.

Tips on Writing from C.S. Lewis - Blog - Eternal Perspective Ministries

Tips on Writing from C.S. Lewis - Blog - Eternal Perspective Ministries | Nonprofit Storytelling | Scoop.it
Natasha Pinczuk's insight:

I have "re-discovered" C.S.Lewis at least a hundred times, and he never fails to capture my imagination and challenge my intellect. This article provides some writing advice straight from the master himself. Point #4 stuck out to me as particularly noteworthy for nonprofit storytelling:"Don’t use adjectives which merely tell us how you want us to feel about the things you are describing." Describe your nonprofit's work and challenges--don't simply say that what you're doing is "life-changing," "difficult," or "exciting." Paint the scene and let the readers come to their own conclusions.
